Female Hair Loss – Treatment
People do not talk about this much, but close to 40 million women or more have experienced or are experiencing some sort of hair loss. But all is not lost, there are treatments out there to stop the loss of hair that women experience and actually re-grow the lost hair.
The first thing you need to do is to determine what is causing your hair loss. In some cases, just finding the cause and correcting it will cure the problem and you will start to re-grow the lost hair. Such items as stress, hormone imbalance, illness, thyroid problems can all be causing hair loss. Once these conditions are corrected you will more than likely stop the hair loss, and re-grow the hair you have lost.
Now if you have androgenic alopecia or female pattern baldness (FPB), or if you do not re-grow your hair after your condition causing the hair loss has been corrected, there are some products out there that can help. Consult your doctor to determine the right method for you.
Minoxidil – It was first used to control high blood pressure. It was noticed that people using this, developed hair growth as a side effect. It was then determined that applying it in liquid form directly to the scalp, hair growth occurred. It is the only Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug for women with FPB. It is used at strength of 2% and is applied directly to the scalp.
Birth Control Pills – For women with low estrogen, taking birth control pills may help. But you must pick the right pill for it to be beneficial for re-growing hair. It is recommended that birth control pills that have a low-androgen index be taken.
Cyproterone Acetate – This is actually a contraceptive pill that is used in Europe. It is also prescribed for women who have FPB. It works by blocking the male hormone present in women called testosterone. The other good thing about this pill is it stops or prevents osteoporosis.
Propecia – This is also approved by the FDA and is taken in pill form. Women, who are planning or are pregnant, should not take this since it has been determined to cause birth defects in babies. It works especially well for women who are going through or are past menopause and have FPB.
These are some of the actions you can take to treat your hair loss problems and re-grow your hair.
