Medicinal plants and herbs have been part of humanity since the dawn of civilization. Neem is a well-known medicinal plant used in India from time immemorial.

In India neem is known as margosa or Indian lilac. It is an evergreen tree and cultivated in various parts of the Indian subcontinent. Neem has been extensively used in ayurveda, unani and homoeopathic medicine and has become a cynosure of modern medicine. Neem is called sarvaroganivarani or reliever of sickness. The tree is regarded as ‘village dispensary’ in India.

The importance of the neem tree has been recognized by National Research Council (USA), which published a report in 1992 entitled ‘Neem – a tree for solving global problems’.

All parts of neem have medical value.

Some medicinal uses of neem as mentioned in ayurveda are:

The leaf is used for treating eye problem, leprosy, intestinal worms, epistaxis anorexia skin ulcers, and biliousness.

The bark of the tree is used as an analgesic, and used to treat fever.

Neem flower is useful in suppressing bile, treat intestinal worms and phlegm.

Fruit helps in relieving piles, eliminate intestinal worms, treat urinary disorder, epistaxis, expel phlegm, cure eye problems, diabetes, wounds and leprosy.

Neem twigs are used in the cure of cough, asthma, hemorrhoids, intestinal worms, obstinate urinary disorder, and diabetes.

Gum obtained from the bark is a very effective for skin diseases like ringworms, wounds and ulcers, and scabies.

Pulp of the seed and neem oil are used in treating intestinal worms and leprosy.

A combination of the root, bark, leaf, flower and fruit is used in treating blood problems, bile afflictions, leprosy, itching, skin ulcer, urticaria etc.

A paste prepared with neem and turmeric was found to be effective in the treatment of scabies. In 97% of cases, the paste was found to cure scabies within 3–15 days of treatment without any adverse effect.

Dried neem leaves in the form of tea are used by the people of Nigeria and Haiti to treat malaria.

Application of neem oil on hair helps to kill head lice and cure dandruff.

Neem flowers help improve eyesight. For this purpose dry neem flowers are used, preferably 6 months to one year old. These flowers are fried lightly using ghee and then taken internally.

Thus the neem’s role in providing a cheaper, safe solution to modern day diseases is unsurpassed. No wonder it is called “arishta” in Ayurveda which means “reliever of sickness”.

Not only is being overweight a matter of social ridicule, but it is also a very dangerous proposition health-wise. Obesity is an open invitation for six of the most terrible diseases known to man – diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular problems, paralysis, gangrene and heart attacks. Hence obesity may not itself be a disease, but it could definitely be a life-threatening condition.

In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Medo Roga. It is simply defined as the condition in which excessive amount of fat is accumulated in the body. There are two main reasons for this abnormal deposition of fat – (i) excessive fat intake through the diet and (ii) some metabolic problem which does not allow the proper utilization of fat in the body. Ayurveda holds agni, or the digestive fire, responsible for obesity. When the agni is vitiated, then the ama (toxic substances) is built up in the body, leading to obesity.

The fat accumulated in the body could lead to a deposition of cholesterol in the arteries and the veins of the body. This is where most of the problems begin. The collection of the cholesterol can reduce the diameters of the blood vessels leading to a decreased blood flow into various important organs of the body, including the heart.

(1)	Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Obesity

1.	Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)

Guduchi is an indigenous Indian herb which is not very well-known out of India. It is a commonly prescribed herb in Ayurveda for the condition of obesity. It helps in the proper canalization of fats in the body and thus reduces obesity.

2.	Guggulu (Commiphora wightii)

A great deal of research has been done on the guggulu plant in recent times. The guggulsterone present in it is an alkaloid that has been found to be especially effective in heart ailments. Among its myriad other benefits, one is the reduction of fat accumulation in the body, giving people a leaner physique. Guggulu is the Ayurvedic drug of choice for obesity.

3.	Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis)

Known as amalaki in Indian medicine, the Indian gooseberry is the richest source of vitamin C among all foodstuffs. Vitamin C can disintegrate fatty buildup in the body. Hence, it is a very effective herb for the treatment of obesity and related conditions. The amalaki is an integral component of Triphala, which is commonly prescribed in the treatment of obesity.

(2)	Dietary Treatments for Obesity

There is a direct relation between the diet one eats and obesity. Controlling the diet is a sure method of controlling obesity. The following guidelines must be observed:-

1.	Foods that are excessively rich in carbohydrates must be avoided. These include rice and potatoes. Wheat must be used instead of rice. Barley and maize can also be used effectively.

2.	Fatty substances must be avoided. In obese people, the chances of cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis are high. Hence, people who consume lots of hydrogenated fats have greater risk of cholesterol buildup in their arteries.

3.	Obesity increases the chances of diabetes mellitus. Hence, people who are overweight must reduce their intake of sugars and other sweet foods.

4.	Bitter and pungent foods are found to be effective in the control of weight and also preventing the dangers of diabetes in obese people. The bitter gourd and the bitter variety of drumstick are beneficial in this aspect.

5.	Obese people must avoid preserved foods. The same applies to refrigerated drinks and cold foods.

6.	Among meats, avoid red meats as they have high fatty contents. While buying meats, ask for the lean cuts and get the fats trimmed from them before cooking.

(3)	Ayurvedic Treatments for Obesity

Guggulu is prescribed by most Ayurvedic physicians as the drug of choice in the control of obesity. It may be prescribed in its pure form (in the dosage of one gram four times a day), or it can be given in a mixture form as Navaka Guggulu or Triphala Guggulu. These are given in tablet form, followed by some hot drink. Mineral supplements such as Tapyaadi Lauha and Shilajitawadi Lauha are given in conjunction with the Guggulu tablets.

(4)	Home Remedies for Obesity

1.	When you wake up in the morning, have a tablespoonful of honey mixed in an equal amount of water.

2.	Drinking hot water continuously throughout the day also helps to dissolve the excess fat in the body.

3.	Ginger is effective in dissolving fat. Have it twice or thrice a day in the form of tea.

4.	Every one day a week, have a totally liquid diet. Fasting entirely can also be done if it is physically tolerable. This helps to flush out the toxins and excess fats accumulated throughout the week.

5.	Regular exercise is one of the most important things. It helps to reduce the excess fats in the body and also keep the person fresh and active throughout the day.

By: Tom alter

About the Author:

Sometimes what modern man considered the “old ways” of healing have a way of coming round to be known as the “new way”.

Such is the case with Ayurvedic Medicine Treatments for Arthritis. Based on ancient Brahmin Indian treatments 3,000 to 4,000 years old, this holistic approach to helping sufferers cope with arthritis is enjoying a re-found popularity. The World Health Organization agrees Ayurvedic treatment is a useful traditional health science.

As with other holistic systems of healing, Ayurveda recognizes that all people are unique, and thus even though they may evince the same outward symptoms, the path to their healing differs.

This means the remedy for your arthritis pains and suffering is different than those of your neighbor or friend.

Several recent studies in the United States, India and elsewhere have confirmed Ayurvedic treatments as a means to natural arthritic pain relief.

The American College of Rheumatology conducted a double-blind test trial of 90 people with osteoarthritis. The study show 50 percent of the patients who took a combination of tumeric, frankincense (Boswellia) ginger and ashwagandha had significant improvements with pain relief as well as mobility. In contrast, only 20 percent of their placebo group reported any arthritis pain relief.

In another double-blind study of 182 people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, the use of the same anti-inflammatory herbs brought about “marked improvement” in pain relief, reduction of stiffness and the severity of swollen joints and brought improvement in their overall ability to function.

A study in India considered the results of the combining of frankincense, tumeric, zinc and ashwagandha as natural arthritic pain relief. (Though the herbs have some medicinal powers on their own for the treatment of arthritis and other joint pain, Ayurvedic medicine has found combining them for better results.)

In the 1991 study, 42 osteoarthritis sufferers who were treated with the Ayurveda herbs in concert, showed “a significant reduction in pain and disability”.

And although researchers say it can take up to a month for Ayurveda herb usage to produce positive results, the effects of the herb use for arthritis pain relief can last for several years without the need to increase dosage!

To help you heal without the addition of more medication, which may bring with them own complications, requires more than popping yet another pill. It requires attention to the mind and body. Both medically-trained physicians and Ayurvedic practitioners agree a holistic approach to the treatment of Arthritis is apt to bring about the best and longest-lasting results.

To help assist your natural arthritis pain relief, in addition to Ayurvedic treatments, it’s also imperative to work at improving your lifestyle habits and practices. Here are some examples:

* Add meditation and occasional fasting to your Ayurvedic routine

* Exercise often – but avoid those that cause you pain. Start and progress slowly, but do it daily.

* Reduce caffeine intake

* Don’t’ smoke. If you do, quit – if necessary, recall American humorist Mark Twain’s advice, “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window…but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.”

* Reduce your stress and anxiety using simple breathing techniques and physical exercise.

Your arthritis can be managed through natural pain relief by using ayurvedic treatment. You won’t know until you try. Why suffer any longer?

By: Rayaz Siddiqi

About the Author:

Pains in the legs could be due to joint pains or due to muscle cramps. Joint pains are generally observed in arthritis, a condition which sets in as the person’s advances in age. In arthritis, the articulation of the bones gradually wears out over time, leading to pains whenever they function. This is called as Aama Vata in Ayurvedic language.

Muscle cramps usually affect the muscles of the leg. It is known as Khalli Vata in Ayurveda. There is a special term for the muscle cramps that affect only the calf muscles, and that is Pindikoveshtana. From an Ayurvedic point of view, almost all pains are caused due to vitiation of the vata dosha. Specifically in leg pains due to muscle cramps, the Vyana vata is vitiated. This is a sub-dosha of the vata which controls the involuntary muscles of the body.

Pains occur when there is an ama buildup in the body. Ama is the name given to the toxic materials caused due to improper digestion that cannot be expelled from the body. Such ama causes several problems, including leg pains. Ama is built up due to high agni, i.e. digestive fire, which is governed by the pitta dosha. Hence there is also a pitta relation with the leg pains.

(1)	Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Leg Pains

1.	Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Clove oil is applied on the affected leg muscle as a poultice. It provides immediate relief from pains, especially if they are due to muscle cramps.

2.	Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger has wonderful painkilling properties. It must be included in the daily diet if muscular pains in the legs are a chronic problem.

3.	Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Licorice is very effective in relieving muscle aches. An infusion of its roots must be prepared in water and kept overnight. This helps in almost all kinds of muscle problems.

4.	Madhuca (Madhuca indica)

Madhuca has positive effects on leg pains, especially if they are due to rheumatism. Its oil is applied locally over the affected regions.

5.	Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Pepper helps in dilating the superficial blood vessels, thus helping in proper blood circulation. It also has analgesic properties and can be used as a liniment in muscular problems.

(2)	Dietary Treatments for Leg Pains

Since improper digestion can cause leg pains, care must be taken not to eat anything that can cause digestive problems. Do not consume constipating foods; keep your diet simple. Consume plenty of green vegetables and leafy vegetables that contain fiber. Vitamin C obtained from amalaki, oranges and tomatoes is also good for digestion. After each meal, make it a habit to eat a plantain instead of some calorie-rich dessert like ice-cream. A plantain is a food that is extremely rich in minerals of potassium, magnesium and calcium. Hence it is extremely beneficial for proper metabolism within the leg region. Avoid coffee and chocolate if you have persistent leg pain problems.

The importance of adequate amount of fluids cannot be stressed enough. Dehydration is a leading cause of leg pains. Keep drinking one glass of water every waking hour to prevent dehydratiom.

(3)	Ayurvedic Treatments for Leg Pains

There are good oils in Ayurveda that are used for external application over the affected legs. If the muscle pains have occurred suddenly, then most likely they are cramps. In such cases, Mahanarayana tailam or Praharini tailam are applied to get relief. Warming the oils a bit and then applying has better effects.

For internal administration, Sinhanaada Guggulu is prescribed. This drug is also a mild laxative. So it will also correct whatever digestive problems may be there with the system. Other commonly prescribed medicines are Laxmivilasa rasa and Pratapa Lankeshwara rasa.

(4)	Home Remedies for Leg Pains

1	If you have regular complains of pains in the legs, then there are some simple exercises you can do in order to get relief from them. Some of them are described:-

a)	Lie on your back on a firm bed. Wear some loose clothing over the legs, such as shorts or pajamas. Raise your legs gradually in the air, as far as they can go. The heels should point skywards. Hold the legs in this stretched position for about ten seconds and then bring them down again. Do this five times per session, and repeat the exercise thrice a day.

b)	Alternatively you can stand facing a wall at an arm’s length distance from it. Stretch out your arms and touch the wall with your open palms. Then slowly pull yourself forward (towards the wall). Feel the stretching pressure building up in your legs. Hold yourself in this stretched position for about ten seconds and then let go. Do this five times per session, and repeat the exercise thrice a day.

c)	Even Yoga has several leg stretching exercises that can be used with great positive effects. These exercises are Uttanpadasana, Janusandhi and Gomukhasana.

2	If the cramps occur when performing an exercise workout or some physical activity, then have a glass of lemon water with a pinch of salt in it.

3	If you have leg pains in the joints due to arthritis, then crush two to three cloves of garlic and add them to a glass of diluted milk. Boil it to quarter its amount and drink it just before bedtime.

4	Applying a hot pack or fomenting the leg with steam helps to improve circulation in the leg and eases the pain. Even applying cold packs helps. This will reduce the blood flow into the leg region and help the muscle to relax.

5	Put one part of camphor in twenty parts of mustard oil. Keep this in the sun till the time the camphor properly dissolves in the oil. Use this oil to massage the leg on a daily basis.

6	If you get a sudden sprain in the leg, then prepare a paste of turmeric with lime and salt and apply it on the affected part.

By: Tom alter

About the Author:

Arthritis

Arthritis is basically a medical condition in which an individual suffers from joints pain. It is caused by damage to the joints and has become quite widespread in the present day world. Many people above 55 years of age are suffering from arthritis today. There are different from of arthritis, of which the most common one is osteoarthritis.

Disease process in Arthritis

According to Ayurveda mostly pains are caused by the aggravation of vata (air) dosha. Arthritis is a condition which is caused by accumulation of ama and aggravation of vata. (Ama is a toxic by-product of improper digestion.) This ama circulates in the whole body and deposits or gets collected at the sites which are weaker.

Arthritis and Joint Pains

ArthiritisArthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases in the world. Despite lot of research and effort, an effective cure has still eluded us. All that can be offered are the anti inflammatory and pain killers like Aspirin.

Ayurveda: A art of healthy living

According to ayurveda arthritis is caused primarily by an excess of ama and lack of agni. This can be caused by poor digestion and a weakened colon, resulting in the accumulation of undigested food and the buildup of waste matter. Poor digestion allows toxins to accumulate in the body, and problems with the colon allow the toxins to reach the joints.

Ayurveda for Arthritis

Ayurveda is a holistic approach to healthcare with roots in ancient India. Translated, (ayur) is life and (veda) is knowledge. Treatment techniques used for arthritis can include healthy diet and lifestyle changes, ayurvedic herbal remedies and supplements, exercise, spiritual pratices, yoga, massage, meditation and other healing modalities.

Spa Natural Arthritis Treatments

When toxins accumulate, circulate and build up in the joints, inhibiting function, mobility and comfort, the result is the pain and suffering of arthritis.

When impurities develop faster than the body can eliminate them, cleansing alone is not enough for arthritis pain relief. The key to preventing toxic buildup is to create healthier cells. The Raj arthritis treatment program improves digestion and metabolism, forming pure, easily assimilated nutrient plasma, which lubricates and nourishes joint tissue, releasing impurities.

Ayurvedic Arthritis Care

Arthritis is the most common chronic degenerative disease in the world. This can be very painful condition and can affect both the young and old . Arthritis is known as Vata (air) disease which involves pain and weakening of the bones.

Ayurvedic treatment for Beauty Care treatment, Arthritis, Hepatic disease, Heart disease, diabeties , Hair disease, Slimming, Gyane problems, Depression and Mental stress, Sexual Disorder, Single Herb offerd by Paras Herbocare

Ayurvedic treatment for Hair disease, Arthritis, Hepatic disease, Heart disease, diabeties , Slimming, Gyane problems, Depression and Mental stress, Sexual Disorder, Beauty Care treatment, Single Herb offerd by Paras Herbocare

It has always been our eternal desire to preserve our beauty, health and long life.
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old healing tradition rooted in very old Indian culture. This vast body of healing knowledge — from time to time referred to as the “Mother of All Healing” — has lately come to the attention of Western medical researchers seeking novel therapeutic compounds. While screening a number of traditional Vedic formulas scientists discovered that one of the most revered of all Ayurvedic compounds — Triphala — exhibits a number of health benefits, including:

* Exhibits antioxidant activity

* Lowers cholesterol

* Reduce tumors in animals, and

* Protects and improve liver function

* Normalizes blood pressure

* Inhibits HIV

A person taking Triphala frequently will feel pure, light and revitalized. Your body metabolism will be regularize and detoxified.

A well-liked folk saying in India is, “No mother? Do not be anxious so long as you have Triphala.” The basis is that Indian people believe that triphala is capable to care for the inner organs of the body as a mother cares for her child. Each of the three herbal fruits of Triphala takes care of the body by gently promoting internal cleansing of all circumstances of stagnation and excess while at the same time it improves digestion and assimilation.

Herbal Actions

Triphala is combination of three herbs: Amalaki, Bibhitaki and Haritaki. Amla helps to fix damaged cells on the intestinal wall, and the fruit contains the uppermost natural known source of vitamin C. It is said to have 20 times the vitamin C percent in orange. Bibhitaki acts to take away mucus build-up where bacteria, yeast and parasites can proliferate. The last is Haritaki, which acts as a bowel toner, slightly than a laxative. These three herbs effort in consort to quietly promote internal cleansing of all situations of stagnation and excess, while at the same time, they aid in the digestion and absorption of food. In India, Triphala is measured the supreme and most versatile of all herbal formulations. For centuries, Triphala has been extensively known and used as a standard household health supplement. Triphala is regarded as a significant rasayana in Ayurvedic medicine. Medicinal herbs in the rasayana group are believed to encourage health, immunity, and long life. In many households, it is taken on a daily basis by all family members to help prevent disease and maintain health. Triphala is recommended in Ayurveda for the treatment of a variety of circumstances, and also forms a base for many other herbal formulations. It is measured to be one of the most valued arrangements by practitioners of traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Health Benefits of Triphala

· It acts as an antioxidant agent preventing any free radical development in the body.
Eczema is a skin disease, which is observed as exfoliation of the skin, mostly accompanied by severe itching. In the chronic stages, there may be oozing of pus and bleeding from the affected regions. It is also commonly referred to as dermatitis.

In Ayurveda, eczema is known as Vicharchika. It is caused due to the vitiation of all the three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha. Eczema is an infectious disease. It can spread from one person to another. It has been found to run in families. Especially if there is some allergy, then there is greater chance of eczema. Other factors that can bring on eczema are age, climate, food, stress and nature of skin. Eczema has more chances of occurring during puberty and menopause.

Useful Herbs for the Treatment of Eczema

- Babul (Acacia arabica) The bark of the babul tree is potent in the treatment of eczema. It is boiled in water and the fumes are used to foment the affected areas.

- Butea (Butea monosperma) In the treatment of skin diseases such as eczema, its the seeds of the butea tree that are useful. The seeds of the butea are mixed with lime water and are applied on the affected regions to get the required benefits.

- Linseed (Linum usitatissimum) Linseed is applied on the affected regions in the form of its oil mixed with lime water. This is effective in the treatment of many skin ailments including eczema.

- Madhuca (Madhuca indica) Madhuca leaves are used to get the madhuca oil. This is applied on the regions where the eczema has occurred to obtain relief.

Dietary Treatments for Eczema

The following dietary rules are very important for eczema patients to be obeyed:-

- Salt must be reduced in the diet.

- Sour foods must be avoided. This includes all pickles, curds, etc.

- Bitter tastes are useful. These are obtained from vegetables such as bitter gourd, bitter drumstick and flowers of the neem tree.

- Turmeric has a soothing effect on the skin. It must be used liberally in flavoring the food. Turmeric is also useful if it is applied locally over the affected parts.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Eczema

Eczema is a constitutional disease. Its cause is deep-seated within the body. Hence external medications are not effective in eczema. With such medications, the outer symptoms may disappear, but the underlying cause remains. Ayurveda attempts at curing eczema from its roots. The method used is an elaborate process to purify the blood of the individual.

The different steps involved are:-

a) Snehana – This method oleates the skin, i.e. makes it smooth using oily preparations. b) Swedana – This method induces sweating which removes the toxins from the blood. c) Panchkarma – These are the five steps to improve the blood. They include vamana (emesis), virechana (purgation), vasti (enema), siro-virechana (errhines) and rakta mokshana (blood-letting).

The following Ayurvedic preparations are used in the treatment of eczema:-

One teaspoonful of Panchatikta ghritam twice a day and one tablet of Arogyavardhini thrice a day are prescribed to all patients of eczema.

In addition, a dosage of 50 milligrams of Chaturmukha rasa with gold is prescribed to be taken twice a day along with 15 milliliters of Khadirarishta thrice a day. All treatments must be continued for one month.

Physicians would suggest massaging the area with Mahamarichyadi taila or Guduchyadi taila.

Home Remedies for Eczema

- Applying the juice of the wild almond (Terminalia catapa) on the affected parts provides relief.

- An emulsion can be made with the seeds of the karanja (Pongamia pinnata) and lemon juice. This is very beneficial if applied externally.

- An ointment is prepared using one part of sesame oil, sixteen parts of arka (Calatropics gigantica) and one part of turmeric. This should be applied externally.

- Prepare a brew of the peel of the banyan tree. Both drinking this brew and applying it externally over the affected parts show promising results.

- After meals, take one teaspoonful of Panchanimbadi choorna, which is available at all Ayurvedic outlets.

There are some other preventive methods that are necessary for people with eczema. These are enlisted below:-

- Soap must not be used over the affected regions. Mild soaps can be used, but it is best to avoid them. Hot water must not be used for baths. Adding some olive oil to the water helps.

- If the skin over the affected part is excessively dry, then a ghee or an oil massage will help. This will prevent the skin from erupting.

- People with eczema should take care that their bodies do not suffer from sudden extremities of climate. Hence, traveling must be done with care.

- The products of wool are not good for skins affected with eczema. Hence, people with eczema must avoid blankets and sweaters that are made of wool.

- People with eczema must take care that they do not sweat too much. Sweat can irritate the eczema.

By: Dr.Anna Hardy

About the Author:

Ayurveda is the traditional natural medicine of India dating back over 5000 years. It is a unique holistic system of healing based on the interaction of body, mind and spirit. Originally the wisdom of Ayurveda, and other ancient Indian wisdom, was passed orally from one generation to another. The name Ayurveda derives from two Sanskrit words, broadly Ayur meaning life and Veda meaning knowledge or science. This conveys the fact that Ayurveda is more than a system of medicine. It is a way of life that aims to enhance our well being, and increase longevity through a union of physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Ayurveda is truly ‘holistic’. Thus from a holistic point of view, when we are talking about health we cannot separate it from its many other contexts. Abhyanga is the anointing of the body with oil. Often medicated and usually warm, the oil is massaged into the entire body before bathing. For thousands of years, people have used abhyanga to maintain health, benefit sleep patterns, increase longevity. It has also been used as a medicine for certain disorders. Abhyanga can be incorporated into a routine appropriate for almost anyone.

The Sanskrit word sneha can be translated as both “oil” and “love”. It is believed that the effects of abhyanga are similar to those received when one is saturated with love. Like the experience of being loved, abhyanga can give a deep feeling of stability and warmth. Sneha is subtle; this allows the oil/love to pass through minute channels in the body and penetrate deep layers of tissue.

In Ayurveda, it is believed that there are seven layers of tissue in the body. Each successive layer is more concentrated and life-giving. For sneha to reach the deepest layer, it is believed that it must be massaged into the body for 800 matras, roughly five minutes. To give this kind of attention to your entire body, you may need about fifteen-minutes.
