In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Medo Roga. It is simply defined as the condition in which excessive amount of fat is accumulated in the body. There are two main reasons for this abnormal deposition of fat – (i) excessive fat intake through the diet and (ii) some metabolic problem which does not allow the proper utilization of fat in the body. Ayurveda holds agni, or the digestive fire, responsible for obesity. When the agni is vitiated, then the ama (toxic substances) is built up in the body, leading to obesity.
The fat accumulated in the body could lead to a deposition of cholesterol in the arteries and the veins of the body. This is where most of the problems begin. The collection of the cholesterol can reduce the diameters of the blood vessels leading to a decreased blood flow into various important organs of the body, including the heart.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Obesity
1. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)
Guduchi is an indigenous Indian herb which is not very well-known out of India. It is a commonly prescribed herb in Ayurveda for the condition of obesity. It helps in the proper canalization of fats in the body and thus reduces obesity.
2. Guggulu (Commiphora wightii)
A great deal of research has been done on the guggulu plant in recent times. The guggulsterone present in it is an alkaloid that has been found to be especially effective in heart ailments. Among its myriad other benefits, one is the reduction of fat accumulation in the body, giving people a leaner physique. Guggulu is the Ayurvedic drug of choice for obesity.
3. Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis)
Known as amalaki in Indian medicine, the Indian gooseberry is the richest source of vitamin C among all foodstuffs. Vitamin C can disintegrate fatty buildup in the body. Hence, it is a very effective herb for the treatment of obesity and related conditions. The amalaki is an integral component of Triphala, which is commonly prescribed in the treatment of obesity.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Obesity
There is a direct relation between the diet one eats and obesity. Controlling the diet is a sure method of controlling obesity. The following guidelines must be observed:-
1. Foods that are excessively rich in carbohydrates must be avoided. These include rice and potatoes. Wheat must be used instead of rice. Barley and maize can also be used effectively.
2. Fatty substances must be avoided. In obese people, the chances of cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis are high. Hence, people who consume lots of hydrogenated fats have greater risk of cholesterol buildup in their arteries.
3. Obesity increases the chances of diabetes mellitus. Hence, people who are overweight must reduce their intake of sugars and other sweet foods.
4. Bitter and pungent foods are found to be effective in the control of weight and also preventing the dangers of diabetes in obese people. The bitter gourd and the bitter variety of drumstick are beneficial in this aspect.
5. Obese people must avoid preserved foods. The same applies to refrigerated drinks and cold foods.
6. Among meats, avoid red meats as they have high fatty contents. While buying meats, ask for the lean cuts and get the fats trimmed from them before cooking.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Obesity
Guggulu is prescribed by most Ayurvedic physicians as the drug of choice in the control of obesity. It may be prescribed in its pure form (in the dosage of one gram four times a day), or it can be given in a mixture form as Navaka Guggulu or Triphala Guggulu. These are given in tablet form, followed by some hot drink. Mineral supplements such as Tapyaadi Lauha and Shilajitawadi Lauha are given in conjunction with the Guggulu tablets.
(4) Home Remedies for Obesity
1. When you wake up in the morning, have a tablespoonful of honey mixed in an equal amount of water.
2. Drinking hot water continuously throughout the day also helps to dissolve the excess fat in the body.
3. Ginger is effective in dissolving fat. Have it twice or thrice a day in the form of tea.
4. Every one day a week, have a totally liquid diet. Fasting entirely can also be done if it is physically tolerable. This helps to flush out the toxins and excess fats accumulated throughout the week.
5. Regular exercise is one of the most important things. It helps to reduce the excess fats in the body and also keep the person fresh and active throughout the day.

Best Herbal and Ayurvedic Cure for Eczema Treatment
In Ayurveda, eczema is known as Vicharchika. It is caused due to the vitiation of all the three doshas – vata, pitta and kapha. Eczema is an infectious disease. It can spread from one person to another. It has been found to run in families. Especially if there is some allergy, then there is greater chance of eczema. Other factors that can bring on eczema are age, climate, food, stress and nature of skin. Eczema has more chances of occurring during puberty and menopause.
Useful Herbs for the Treatment of Eczema
- Babul (Acacia arabica) The bark of the babul tree is potent in the treatment of eczema. It is boiled in water and the fumes are used to foment the affected areas.
- Butea (Butea monosperma) In the treatment of skin diseases such as eczema, its the seeds of the butea tree that are useful. The seeds of the butea are mixed with lime water and are applied on the affected regions to get the required benefits.
- Linseed (Linum usitatissimum) Linseed is applied on the affected regions in the form of its oil mixed with lime water. This is effective in the treatment of many skin ailments including eczema.
- Madhuca (Madhuca indica) Madhuca leaves are used to get the madhuca oil. This is applied on the regions where the eczema has occurred to obtain relief.
Dietary Treatments for Eczema
The following dietary rules are very important for eczema patients to be obeyed:-
- Salt must be reduced in the diet.
- Sour foods must be avoided. This includes all pickles, curds, etc.
- Bitter tastes are useful. These are obtained from vegetables such as bitter gourd, bitter drumstick and flowers of the neem tree.
- Turmeric has a soothing effect on the skin. It must be used liberally in flavoring the food. Turmeric is also useful if it is applied locally over the affected parts.
Ayurvedic Treatments for Eczema
Eczema is a constitutional disease. Its cause is deep-seated within the body. Hence external medications are not effective in eczema. With such medications, the outer symptoms may disappear, but the underlying cause remains. Ayurveda attempts at curing eczema from its roots. The method used is an elaborate process to purify the blood of the individual.
The different steps involved are:-
a) Snehana – This method oleates the skin, i.e. makes it smooth using oily preparations. b) Swedana – This method induces sweating which removes the toxins from the blood. c) Panchkarma – These are the five steps to improve the blood. They include vamana (emesis), virechana (purgation), vasti (enema), siro-virechana (errhines) and rakta mokshana (blood-letting).
The following Ayurvedic preparations are used in the treatment of eczema:-
One teaspoonful of Panchatikta ghritam twice a day and one tablet of Arogyavardhini thrice a day are prescribed to all patients of eczema.
In addition, a dosage of 50 milligrams of Chaturmukha rasa with gold is prescribed to be taken twice a day along with 15 milliliters of Khadirarishta thrice a day. All treatments must be continued for one month.
Physicians would suggest massaging the area with Mahamarichyadi taila or Guduchyadi taila.
Home Remedies for Eczema
- Applying the juice of the wild almond (Terminalia catapa) on the affected parts provides relief.
- An emulsion can be made with the seeds of the karanja (Pongamia pinnata) and lemon juice. This is very beneficial if applied externally.
- An ointment is prepared using one part of sesame oil, sixteen parts of arka (Calatropics gigantica) and one part of turmeric. This should be applied externally.
- Prepare a brew of the peel of the banyan tree. Both drinking this brew and applying it externally over the affected parts show promising results.
- After meals, take one teaspoonful of Panchanimbadi choorna, which is available at all Ayurvedic outlets.
There are some other preventive methods that are necessary for people with eczema. These are enlisted below:-
- Soap must not be used over the affected regions. Mild soaps can be used, but it is best to avoid them. Hot water must not be used for baths. Adding some olive oil to the water helps.
- If the skin over the affected part is excessively dry, then a ghee or an oil massage will help. This will prevent the skin from erupting.
- People with eczema should take care that their bodies do not suffer from sudden extremities of climate. Hence, traveling must be done with care.
- The products of wool are not good for skins affected with eczema. Hence, people with eczema must avoid blankets and sweaters that are made of wool.
- People with eczema must take care that they do not sweat too much. Sweat can irritate the eczema.

Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies for Cholesterol Treatment
Cholesterol is present in fatty acids. Some cholesterol is needed for the proper utilization of foods in the body, formation of the hormones and the bile, etc. This is known as the high-density cholesterol, or simply, the useful cholesterol. The rest of the cholesterol simply builds up in the arteries without any apparent function. This is the low-density cholesterol, or the bad cholesterol.
The buildup of cholesterol can be reduced by several Ayurvedic treatments. Cholesterol reduction means safety from the various cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading causes of deaths in the world today.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Cholesterol
- Alfalfa (Medicago satina) Alfalfa is effective in treating problems of the arteries. It helps in clearing arteries congested with cholesterol.
- Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna) Arjuna has been used since centuries in the treatment of heart related problems such as heart attacks. The bark of the arjuna when taken in powder form has beneficial properties. This can dissolve the cholesterol that accumulates in the coronary artery and reduce the possibility of heart attacks.
- Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) Coriander is a very good diuretic. It makes the kidneys perform their functions of excretion better. Therefore the kidneys flush out the excess unneeded cholesterols from the body.
- Garlic (Allium cepa) Garlic is very beneficial to people with cholesterol problems that affect the heart. Eating two to three cloves of garlic a day helps to reduce or even completely eliminate the harmful cholesterol in the blood. Garlic can disintegrate the blood cholesterol and hence free up the arteries.
- Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) This is a traditional Indian herb which has become very popular in the Ayurvedic treatment of cholesterol-related heart problems. It contains guggulsterones which have been proven to reduce the levels of cholesterol on regular use. 25 mg of these guggulsterones are prescribed for intake thrice a day.
- Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) Holy basil has the capacity to dissolve the accumulated cholesterol from the arteries into the person’s bloodstream. From here they are eliminated by the kidneys.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Cholesterol
The various dietary regimes which will help you to reduce the buildup of cholesterol in the arteries are as follows:-
- Keep a careful watch on the amount of calories you are consuming. Say no to chocolates, ice creams, red meats and all such foods that can increase the calorie count.
- Sources of fats such as fried foods are to be avoided. Groundnut oil must be strictly prohibited. But fat sources such as cow’s milk, cow’s ghee and cow’s butter are recommended. Buffalo dairy products are to be avoided.
- Consume more fresh vegetables and fruits. Green leafy vegetables are needed since they would provide roughage for the elimination of the waste materials.
- Soy and soy products are very beneficial for the proper utilization of cholesterol.
- Drink lots of water. Water will help to remove the toxic buildup in the arteries.
- Smoking and alcoholism must be avoided as they interfere with the proper utilization of cholesterol in the body.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatment for Cholesterol
Ayurvedic treatment for high level of cholesterol is to prescribe the various herbs that have properties to reduce the buildup.
One popular herb in Ayurvedic medicine is arjuna. It is prescribed in several forms such as Arjunarishta and Arjuna Ghritam. Other popular medicines are Hridayarnava Rasa and Prabhakara Vati. If the cholesterol amount is very profuse, then Mrigamadasava is prescribed.
Yoga is also very beneficial in proper circulation and elimination of the cholesterol buildup in the body. Some of the useful asanas are:- a) Ardhamatsyendrasana b) Shalabhasana c) Padmasana d) Vajrasana
(4) Home Medications
- Drinking coriander in water everyday helps in the reduction of cholesterol in the body. This regime must be continued for about a month. Then the cholesterol levels must be checked again.
- Boil a glassful of milk with a piece of garlic in it. This will reduce the cholesterol and take care of cardiac pains. It has to be continued for a few days before the method begins to show its effects.
- Have cold hipbaths twice daily. These have been shown to have positive effects in the reduction of cholesterol when taken on a regular basis.
- A simple remedy is to have a single piece of garlic every morning. This takes time to show results, but the results are positive.
- Consume some almonds and walnuts on a daily basis.

Sterility – Ayurvedic Treatments May Help You!
There are two types of sterility or infertility seen in people. The first type is known as primary sterility. This is when the couple has never conceived a child. The second type, known as secondary sterility occurs when the couple has conceived a child, but has had a miscarriage. Primary sterility can be due to the male or the female partner; but secondary sterility is only due to problems with the woman’s reproductive system.
Dietary Guidelines for the Treatment of Sterility
Sometimes the problem is with the food habits of the person. The following dietary guidelines must be obeyed by men and women who are unable to bear children.
- All milk products are found to be very good for bearing children. Drinking on glass of pure milk before the sexual activity always helps. This is found to be more effective in the male. This explains the Indian tradition of the bride giving the groom a glassful of milk on the first wedding night.
- Males suffering from sterility must not consume more of saline, sour, pungent and bitter foods. Foods that are sweet and astringent in taste are good. Sweet dishes prepared in milk are the best.
- Females suffering from sterility must avoid alkaline and pungent foods. Instead, they must take sweet foods and fruits in large quantities.
- Eggs are very good for promoting conception in both men and women.
- Rice is better than wheat for sterile couples. Women who are not able to conceive must be given an all-rice diet.
- Ghee is the only acceptable fat for sterile couples.
- Honey is considered to be good. It is also effective in several problems of the reproductive system in both men and women.
- Nuts are very good for men who have a low sperm count. Groundnuts and almonds top the list.
- People who have sterility problems must never keep their stomachs empty for a long period of time.
Ayurvedic Treatments for Sterility
For Sterile Women
Bala is the herb which is mostly prescribed for sterile women. Externally, it is used as a douche. For this purpose, its root is boiled in oil and milk and then used with lukewarm water. Internally, it is used in the form of medicated oil taken along with milk.
Phala ghrita is also very commonly prescribed. This is given in doses of two teaspoons twice daily when the stomach is empty. Milk is the vehicle used for phala ghrita. Other medicines used are Vanga bhasma and Shilajit. Shilajit is very well-known for its aphrodisiacal properties in both men and women. The dosage of Shilajit is also one teaspoon twice a day.
For Sterile Men
The root of the Ashwagandha plant is most important for the treatment of sterility in men. Its root is dried to kill its smell of horse urine, then powdered and taken in a cup of milk. The ratio is one teaspoon of Ashwagandha powder in one cup of milk. It is to be taken twice every day. Sugar can be mixed in it. Some Ayurvedic doctors also use Ashwagandharishta, which is a preparation of Ashwagandha in alcohol.
Makardhwaja is another important medicine. Makardhwaja is prepared by mixing gold, mercury and sulfur in a careful proportion. It is given in quantities of 125 milligrams twice daily on an empty stomach. The vehicle used is butter and sugar can be added for flavoring it.
Home Remedies for Sterility
- Grind the aerial root of a banyan tree to a fine powder. Collect about 10 grams of this powder. Put this powder in half a liter of milk and boil it. When about 200 milliliters are left, remove it from the flame and strain it. Mix sugar and honey in it. The woman must have this everyday from the fifth or seventh day of the commencement of the periods. Continue having this milk daily for ten days hence. This is considered to be the most effective remedy to make infertile women conceive.
- For women who are keeping normal health, but are still unable to conceive, the following remedy is found to work. Mix Shatavari choorna in ghee or milk and drink it on a daily basis before retiring for the day. This solves all the problems of the reproductive system and also makes it possible for the women to conceive.
- After every meal, the woman must take an areca nut (supari). This is effective in increasing fertility.
- Sterile couples must not overindulge in sexual activity. Restraint must be had, as it will improve the quality of the male sperm.
- Obesity is one of the leading causes of sterility. Hence, enrolling yourself in a weight-loss program will also help to bear children.

How to Get Rid of Ringworm With Ayurvedic Treatment
In Ayurveda, ringworm is known as dadru. Like almost all other skin diseases, it is also caused when the vata dosha is vitiated.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Ringworm
1. Butea (Butea monosperma)
The seeds of butea are effective in treating several skin problems including ringworm and eczema. A poultice of the leaves is prepared and applied on the affected regions.
2. Cassia (Cassia fistula)
The leaves of the cassia are beneficial in the treatment of ringworm. They are ground into a paste and applied directly over the affected parts.
3. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum)
The juice of the coriander leaves mixed with some turmeric is generally given to a patient who suffers from ringworm. It is also helpful if the skin becomes excessively dry and develops ringworm, especially in the winter months.
4. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)
The juice of the holy basil leaves are applied locally on the affected regions. The ringworm subsides after continuous application for a few days.
5. Leadwort (Plumbago zeylanica)
A mixture of the leaves of leadwort is made into a paste with salt and water. This is applied directly on the inflamed skin. This herb is beneficial even for the extremely obstinate ringworm marks.
6. Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus)
A paste of the leaves of the lemon grass is mixed with buttermilk. Applying this on the affected skin helps treat ringworm.
7. Margosa (Azadiractha indica)
Known popularly as the neem tree in India, the margosa is one of the best treatments for ringworm and is used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine. It is used in a variety of ways for both internal and external administration.
8. Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
Turmeric is used since very ancient times in the treatment of ringworm. A solution of the turmeric powder is made and applied directly on the affected skin. Turmeric is also given mixed with honey to the patient in oral form.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Ringworm
Sour foods must be completely avoided in cases of ringworm. This includes curds, cheese and sour vegetables and fruits. Oily foods also aggravate the ringworm lesions. The same can be said about hot and spicy foods. Hence, all these kinds of foods must be avoided. Do not consume any preserved foods and beverages like tea and coffee. Chocolates are also prohibited.
Instead, bitter foods such as the bitter gourd, bitter drumstick and neem must be consumed. The diet must be kept natural and simple (i.e. with the minimal use of spices and artificial additives) as long as the ringworm persists. More greens must be consumed in the food in the form of salads, soups and vegetable dishes.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Ringworm
The Ayurvedic treatment for ringworm makes extensive use of the neem. It is used in the following two ways:-
- The patient is made to bathe daily in water which was boiled earlier with neem leaves in it.
- The neem leaves are made into a paste and applied over the affected parts.
If the ringworm is chronic (i.e. it recurs repeatedly even after treated completely once), then the Paradadi or the Dadrughna balms are applied over the affected skin.
For internal administration, Shuddha Gandhaka is prescribed for ringworm patients. This is given in small doses of 200 milligrams twice a day with honey.
In ringworm, it is necessary to continue the medication for a few days even after the lesions seem to be apparently healed. This is important, or there could be chances of a recurrence. Ideally, the medication should be continued for one week more.
(4) Home Remedies for Ringworm
1. Slice open a raw papaya. Apply its juice on the affected parts of the skin. Alternatively you can also apply the peel of the papaya onto the skin and keep it tied like a bandage. This will provide a cooling effect, which will reduce the itching and help in quick healing.
2. Drink lots of vegetable soups with carrots, radish and spinach in them as important ingredients. These soups will keep the skin moist and help it to fight against the fungal infection that causes ringworm.
3. Prepare a paste of mustard seeds and apply it directly on the affected skin. You will get a slight tingling sensation, but that indicates the healing process has begun. The tingling sensation will subside in a while.
4. Ringworm can become aggravated due to itching. If the skin is dry, then itching can cause eruptions and bleeding of the skin. This can be avoided by keeping the skin supple by the application of coconut oil.

In Ayurveda, gastritis is known as Urdhavaga Amalapitta. It is caused in people with pitta constitution. When the pitta dosha gets vitiated in such people, there are greater chances of getting gastritis.
There are many causes of gastritis. Food poisoning can lead to gastritis, and so can consuming alcohol and drugs like aspirin and steroids. Allergies to certain foods can cause gastritis. Oblique causes for gastritis are physical stresses caused due to flu, some major surgery, severe burns or injuries.
Nowadays the infection of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is looked upon as an important cause of gastritis.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Gastritis
- Asparagus (Asparagus racemosa) Asparagus is known to be an antispasmodic. It reduces the fire in the stomach. The root of the asparagus is effective in reducing the hyperacidity of the digestive system.
- Bitter Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) The tea of the bitter chamomile is effective in allaying the gastritis that is caused due to tensions and worries.
- Cardamom (Elattaria cardamomum) Cardamom has soothing effects on the stomach. It is especially beneficial if the gastritis causes heartburn.
- Fennel (Fenneliculum vulgare) Fennel is used as a digestive traditionally by Indians. After each meal, there is a tradition of chewing some seeds of fennel. Fennel soothes the stomach, facilitates digestion, reduces flatulence and relieves the stomach of excess acidity.
- Ginger (Zingiber officinale) The extract of ginger is effective in treating the acid dyspepsia that is associated with gastritis. It is especially useful for people who consume more of a non-vegetarian food.
- Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) The Indian gooseberry, or amla, is very beneficial in the treatment of several stomach ailments, gastritis included. The other digestive ailments it is used for dyspepsia, burning sensation, anorexia, vomiting and hemorrhage.
- Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) The root of the licorice can soothe the inflammation and the injury to the stomach. It is also known to reduce the proliferation of Helicobacter pylori.
- Rhubarb (Rheum emodi) Rhubarb is a mild agent; so it is effectively used in treating gastritis problems in children. It can reduce the acidity in the stomach.
- Sandalwood (Santalum album) Sandalwood helps in gastritis because it has cooling properties. It can soothe the stomach muscles inflamed by gastritis.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Gastritis
A careful dietary regime is needed in case of gastritis. The following points must be noted.
- Only rice that has been aged for one year must be used. Wheat and barley are beneficial.
- Among vegetables white pumpkin, bitter gourd, cucumber, green banana and banana flower are effective.
- Cow’s milk is preferable to buffalo’s milk.
- People suffering from gastritis must not confuse their stomach glands with different kinds of foods at the same time. It is beneficial if the person is kept on a single diet. Ideally the person must be kept on a milk diet or on a diet of old rice.
- Vitamin C has the capacity to help in the absorption of iron and calcium salts in the body. This eases the digestive process. Therefore, the diet must be rich in vitamin C. Foods that contain vitamin C to a commendable quantity are amlas, oranges, etc.
- Pungent and sour tastes must be avoided. Even chocolates, tea and coffee must be avoided as these can increase the acidic contents in the stomach.
- The person must never eat till the stomach is fool. In gastritis it is better to eat little quantities each time, so that the stomach gets proper time to digest the food.
- Sesame seeds and curds must be avoided.
- There should be a total stop to alcoholism.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatment for Gastritis
Amalaki choorna or Triphala choorna is given in a dose of three grams thrice a day for seven days.
If there is constipation along with gastritis, then Avipattikara choorna is taken as the medicine of choice. The dosage is two teaspoonfuls at bedtime.
There is a list of other Ayurvedic preparations that are useful in the treatment of gastritis. Some of these are Dhaatri loha, Sukumara ghrita, Sootashekhara rasa, Kaamadudha rasa, Leela Vilas rasa, Chandrakala rasa and Amalapittantaka rasa.
(4) Home Medications
- Take one teaspoonful of licorice root powder and mix it with pure ghee and honey. Take this twice each day on an empty stomach.
- Have a banana early in the morning. Drown them with milk. This reduces the acidity within the stomach in some days.
- After each meal have a glassful of milk with Isphagula in it.
- Squeeze the juice of an orange and add some roasted cumin seeds in it. Have this with some salt in it. It provides immense relief in gastritis.
Apart from these, keep the mind always stress-free. Do not go to bed immediately after a meal. There should be an ideal gap of an hour between taking a meal and going to bed.

Liver Enlargement - Dietary and Ayurvedic Treatment, Home Remedies
The increase in the size of the liver happens gradually due to various factors. Some of them are glandular fevers, hepatitis, malaria, liver abscesses and even more serious causes such as leukemia and lymphomas. When the enlargement of the liver occurs, there is an obstruction in breathing as the expanded liver pushes against the wall of the diaphragm and interferes with the respiratory canal. The irritation can cause coughing.
Enlargement of the liver can become a life-threatening condition. It is extremely essential to seek treatment as soon as possible. There are several methods in Ayurveda, which can help prevent and treat the condition of hepatomegaly.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Liver Enlargement
1. Chicory (Chichorium intybus)
Chicory juice obtained from its flowers, seeds and roots is very beneficial in the treatment of several liver problems. Its juice is commonly prescribed to treat enlargement of the liver.
2. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
Dandelion has a very positive effect on the liver, as it stimulates the liver to carry out its normal functions. It can be used in order to treat the condition of an enlarged liver.
3. Henna (Lawsonia inermis)
The bark of the henna plant is taken in powder form in 1.25 to 5 gram doses in order to treat the problem of liver enlargement. Alternatively, its decoction can also be taken in quantities of 30 to 60 grams.
4. Indian Aloe (Aloe barbadensis)
The Indian aloe is used in treatment of hepatomegaly. For treatment, the pulp of a single leaf of the plant is taken and mixed with black salt and ginger. This is taken every morning for ten continuous days.
5. Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum)
The kantakari herb is used in the treatment of enlargement of both the liver and the spleen, which is known as hepatosplenomegaly.
6. Trailing Eclipta (Eclipta alba)
The trailing eclipta is a creeper which has great benefits in the treatment of enlargement of the liver. It is taken in doses of one teaspoon twice a day. The herb is also beneficial if the enlargement of the liver is accompanied by the enlargement of the spleen.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Liver Enlargement
The liver is essential for digestion. Hence it is very important not to consume any food that is difficult to digest when there is a liver enlargement. All fried foods, spicy and salty foods must be avoided. Sour foods are also not good as they can increase the acidity within the stomach and the digestive system. Even curds should not be eaten. However, properly churned buttermilk is good for liver ailments.
Bitter tastes are positive indications in the treatment of hepatomegaly. These can be obtained from bitter gourd and bitter drumstick. They should be included in the daily diet. Sugars can be taken in the form of glucose. In fact a spoonful of glucose must be put in a cup of water and had once a day to regain lost energy and to help the liver in its normal functioning.
Among fats, buffalo’s milk should be avoided. Cow’s and goat’s milk are positive indications. If you can get hold of camel’s milk, then you must consume it as it is considered to be a beneficial factor for people with liver enlargement problems.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Liver Enlargement
For almost all liver problems, Bhringaraj is the drug of choice. This is made from the herb trailing eclipta. This is a very bitter tonic, which is taken with honey to improve the taste.
Picrorrhiza (kutki) and turpeth (nisoth) are also good medications prescribed for liver enlargement. The Arogyavardhini vati can be prescribed which contains a mixture of both these herbs in powder forms.
For liver enlargement, the dhaatu of copper is also generally prescribed. It is taken in the form of a bhasma. Copper is a component of the Arogyavardhini vati.
(4) Home Remedies for Liver Enlargement
1. Consume a regular diet of eggplants. This helps to reduce the enlargement of the liver and to bring it back to its original size.
2. Prepare a half-cup of juice of the bitter gourd. Put some salt in it. Have this on an empty stomach in the morning. This is by far the best home remedy for liver enlargement and even other kinds of liver problems including diabetes mellitus.
3. Spearmint is also beneficial in liver enlargement. You must have its juice sweetened with sugar for a continuous period of ten days.
4. Consume at least half a papaya every day.

Ayurveda places the liver at the center of the body. It is the house of all the five digestive agnis, or fires, and hence if anything goes wrong with the liver, digestion will be the first activity to come under peril. The liver is also responsible for converting plasma (Rasa dhaatu) to blood (Rakta dhaatu) in conjunction with the spleen. Thus, liver defects can cause serious blood ailments also.
This article deals with various Ayurvedic methods and home remedies to take proper care of the liver.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Liver Care
1. Berberis (Berberis vulgaris)
Berberis is nicknamed as the jaundice berry for its beneficial effects on the treatment of jaundice. It is a bitter tonic which is made from the bark of the berberis tree. It is taken in amounts of quarter teaspoon when jaundice strikes.
2. Chicory (Chichorium intybus)
Chicory is one of the most useful herbs in treatment of liver problems. Almost all parts of the herb are important – flowers, seeds and roots. The juice of the chicory plant promotes the secretion of the bile. Hence it is used in different ways in treating liver problems such as bilary stasis, sluggishness of the liver, bile obstruction, jaundice and enlargement of the spleen.
3. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)
Dandelion stimulates the liver and the gall bladder for the proper utilization of fats within the body. It also helps in the detoxification of the liver. Its juice is used in treatment of most liver problems. Even for people with hepatitis, dandelion tea is very beneficial.
4. Gokulakanta (Hygrophila spinosa)
This herb is used for treatment of several liver problems including jaundice, hepatitis and derangement of the liver. Its root is prescribed in such conditions. A specially prepared decoction of the root (60 grams root powder mixed in half a liter of water and boiled for about half an hour) is given in doses of 30 to 60 milliliters twice or thrice daily.
5. Henna (Lawsonia inermis)
The cooling effect of the henna is also beneficial in the treatment of liver problems. Its bark is effective in the treatment of liver problems such as jaundice and enlargement of the liver.
6. Indian Aloe (Aloe barbadensis)
The Indian aloe stimulates the liver into carrying out its functions normally. It is used in the treatment of jaundice and enlargement of the liver.
7. Indian Sorrel (Oxalis corniculata)
Indian sorrel is used in the treatment of jaundice. It is taken in the form of fresh juice mixed with buttermilk made from cow’s milk. It is to be taken once daily during jaundice.
8. Picrorrhiza (Picrorrhiza kurroa)
Picrorrhiza is a very commonly prescribed herb in the treatment of jaundice.
9. Trailing Eclipta (Eclipta alba)
The trailing eclipta has beneficial results in several liver problems. It can be used for the treatment of catarrhal jaundice and liver enlargement. A decoction of the juice of the herb is prescribed in doses of one teaspoon twice a day. To make the juice more effective, it can be added with essences of cardamom and cinnamon. The herb is also beneficial if there is mucus discharge accompanied with the catarrhal jaundice. In that case the juice of a few leaves is mixed with crushed peppercorns and taken with curds early in the morning for seven successive days.
10. Turpeth (Operculina turpethum)
Treatment of jaundice is usually started in Ayurveda with the medication of turpeth. It is given in the form of a powder in quantities of one to two teaspoons in hot water twice a day.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Liver Care
When there is a liver problem, detoxification of the liver is necessary. This is done by fasting for a day. After that, no food that is difficult to digest must be consumed. Bitter vegetables must be given, such as bitter gourd and bitter drumstick. Goat’s or cow’s milk must be taken instead of buffalo’s milk. Instead of curds, buttermilk must be given. Garlic must be included in the diet.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Liver Care
For jaundice and several other liver problems, Ayurvedic treatments begin with two herbs – kutki (picrorrhiza) and nisoth (turpeth). These herbs are taken in a mixed powder form in quantities of one or two teaspoons in hot water twice daily. Arogyavardhini is taken as a common medicine since it contains both kutki and nisoth.
Bhringaraja (trailing eclipta) is the drug of choice for almost all liver ailments. It can be even given to children suffering from liver problems. It is taken with honey as a vehicle because it is quite bitter in taste.
(4) Home Remedies for Liver Care
1. The juice of two raw oranges must be taken once a day for up to a week.
2. Add a little salt and some roasted cumin seeds to a glass of buttermilk. Have it early in the morning. This keeps the liver healthy and protects it from disorders.
3. Extract the juice of about ten papaya seeds. Mix it with a teaspoonful of lime juice. Have this juice once a day.
4. A mixture of carrot and spinach juice is also very beneficial for liver problems.

Teeth Whitening Ayurvedic and Home Remedy Methods
The mouth is the seat of the kapha dosha. Hence, care must be taken not to vitiate the kapha dosha. Problems with the kapha dosha lead to several oral and dental problems, including the loss of whiteness of the teeth.
However, many methods are known to the Indian science of Ayurveda by which a person can get the whiteness of teeth back. There are also methods to maintain whiteness of teeth. Many of these advantageous methods are mentioned in this article, with some other tips and pointers.
(1) Useful Herbs for Whitening of Teeth
1. Babul (Acacia arabica)
The importance of babul in whitening of teeth cannot be expressed in words. It is so much important in Ayurveda for this purpose that the ancient Indians used nothing but the twigs of the babul (the other tree used for this is neem) as disposable toothbrushes. The tannin present in babul is effective in increasing the whiteness of teeth.
2. Banyan (Ficus religiosa)
The aerial roots of the banyan can also be used as disposable toothbrushes. The banyan roots have astringent properties, which not only make the teeth whiter, but also make the teeth and gums healthier.
3. Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)
The leaves of the holy basil are dried in the sun and powdered and used for brushing teeth. The leaves help in maintaining dental hygiene and make the teeth whiter. Apart from the whitening properties, holy basil is also used for protection from problems such as pyorrhea (i.e. bleeding of gums).
4. Margosa (Azadirachtha indica)
The neem tree, or the margosa, is a traditional remedy for having white healthy teeth. Neem twigs are used by several Indians even today as toothbrushes. Neem oils contain astringent and antiseptic properties to fight bad breath, kill microorganisms accumulated on the teeth and to combat dental caries and cavities.
(2) Dietary Methods for Whitening of Teeth
In order to keep the teeth clean and white, pungent, bitter and astringent foods must be included in the daily diet. These tastes have an astringent effect on the teeth which helps to maintain them clean. They also take care of the excess buildup of plaque on the teeth, which makes them lose their pearly white color.
Sugary foods in any form are bad for the teeth. Chocolates are also not good. If you do consume such foods, you must remember to wash your mouth thoroughly with strong gargles so as not to leave any sweet residue in the mouth.
Avoid excess tea and coffee. These beverages contain strong alkaloids which can stain the teeth. The same is applicable to smoking. Almost every person who smokes will lose the white coloration of the teeth. Chewing of the paan (betel leaf), as is done in several Indian regions, is also disastrous to the whiteness of the teeth. This habit can stain the teeth cream, yellow or even a dirty shade of rust brown.
(3) Ayurvedic Methods for Whitening of Teeth
Ayurveda provides many kinds of toothpaste and toothbrushes for maintaining white healthy teeth. One of them is toothpaste made by mixing a paste of holy basil leaves with mustard oil. The neem and babul twigs are used as toothbrushes. They are rubbed vigorously on the teeth (sometimes with charcoal also) in order to remove all the plaque accumulated on the teeth and to make them whiter.
(4) Home Remedies for Whitening of Teeth
1. For teeth that have lost their white color, prepare a mixture of charcoal of babul wood, roasted alum and some rock salt. Rub this on the teeth instead of using the conventional toothpaste. You will have white and long-lasting healthy teeth.
2. You can try using sodium bicarbonate regularly each morning as a toothpowder instead of toothpaste. Sodium bicarbonate replenishes the lost mineral content of the teeth, which helps them to regain their whiteness.
3. Strawberries, tomatoes and amalaki contain good vitamin C content. These can be directly applied on the teeth. Vitamin C helps in removing the plaque on the teeth and makes them whiter.
4. Rub an orange peel on the teeth every night before going to sleep. The vitamin C of the orange peel will combat with the microorganisms all through the night.
5. Take adequate measures of dental hygiene. Brush your teeth after every meal, or at least in the morning and before going to bed. While brushing your teeth, take care to sweep out all the embedded food particles. This is the most natural way to keep your teeth white and healthy.

Each person has qualities or basic characteristics within their personal constitution that control the body known as doshas. These are vata, pitta and kapha. These are made of one or two of the four elements or space.
Most people have three doshas but one dominates the rest. Each of these results in a specific body type and personality. Some are more prone to specific health disorders than others (like diabetes for example).
More On Vata, Pitta And Kapha & Raw Food Composition
Could raw foodists be attracted to the diet because they are a specific dosha, personality type and body type more drawn to eating raw foods? Possibly. Let’s look more closely at the doshas to find out if any fit more specifically.
Vata – This includes the elements air and space, and many consider this one of the strongest and most dominant doshas in part because it controls most autonomic functions in the body. These are automatic functions of the central nervous system including our heart rate and respiration and even our thoughts and mind. If you don’t get enough sleep or you eat before you digest what you’ve eaten previous you can disrupt this dosha. You may be more susceptible to illnesses including those affecting the mind or the way you think, the central nervous system or skin.
Pitta – This represents fire and water; this dosha is more likely to control digestion and many hormones, so someone that is out of balance may feel heartburn or may experience pms-like symptoms or feel angry or confused. Some triggers for these behaviors may include eating food that is too spicy or spending too much time outdoors without rest. Some diseases often associated with this dosha include arthritis and sometimes heart attack or chronic heart disease.
Kapha combines water and earth elements, and many believe this dosha is responsible to keep individuals strong and help boost their immune system. Someone that has kapha out of balance may feel nauseous and may have difficulty eating because of it. There are activities that can worsen this condition including eating too much salt and eating too many sweets. Some problems associated with this condition include diabetes, stomach problems including ulcers and asthma.
Treating Patients
Once a practitioner determines your primary dosha and which is most out of balance, he or she will then work to help restore balance. This may involve making changes to your dietary and sleep schedule to help cure mental and physical ailments.
A cleansing may also be suggested which may involve the use of enemas and fasting. Some practitioners also suggest using herbs to help with symptoms. Still others are advised to meditate as well and perform yoga, tai chi or related activities to help quite the mind and relieve the patient of excess stress or tension. This can also help relieve pain and discomfort. Some patients even receive massage therapy in various forms which can help restore weak life energy, reduce chronic pain and help an individual feel energized if needed.
Finding An Ayurvedic Practitioner
A doctor well-versed in natural health, naturopathic medicine or CAM might have some experience working with this type of medicine. However, if you want someone to really help you based on the principles of Ayurveda, you are better off finding someone that has actually studied in India, because there are hundreds of schools that teach there and many practitioners committed to the art go there to study at least part of the time or for an internship.
Students often have a high-level degree. The U.S. does not actually have a standard for certifying or accrediting the schools that offer programs in Ayurvedic schools, so you may want to work with an organization that networks with other health organizations to verify its credentials and professionalism. Find out who else has graduated from there, and make sure the organization has some references and testimony.
Keep in mind that not everyone is going to have experience or any true ability in this field. You should always confirm someone’s knowledge of the art before asking them for health-related advice!
