The History of Anti-Aging Treatments

Beauty has always been in the eye of the beholder. And youth, throughout the ages, has been considered the epitome of beauty. Young looking skin continues to be a huge market worth millions of pounds in the UK every year, as men and women look for new ways to fight the signs of aging skin. As a result, a plethora of anti wrinkle, anti ageing skin care and skin conditions products flood the market on a regular basis. But is this obsession with young looking skin a new phenomenon?

The simple answer is no. The ancient Egyptians and the Chinese were the first to document their attempts to halt the relentless march of time, noting the effects of certain types of herbs, mineral treatments, diet and exercise on the condition of the skin, all destined to stop the inevitable first wrinkles and keep young and beautiful. But the study of anti ageing techniques isn’t just vanity – it has developed over thousands of years into a complex study of molecular biology, botany and even philosophical and psychological research.

During the ancient Egyptian dynasties, olive leaves were promoted as an anti ageing remedy. The Vedic culture focused on diet and exercise as a means of halting the ageing process, and on the Indian sub-continent, and Ayurvedic medicine concentrated on the youthful effects of Yoga, meditation and, once again, herbal remedies and anti ageing potions and poultices. That research continues today, with the ‘next big thing’ being proudly announced by major manufacturers. These ‘magic’ ingredients include everything from ginger to caffeine, but is there any basis in these claims that one product will reverse the damage to the skin that is an inevitable part of life itself?

The Alchemists spent centuries looking for the ‘Elixir of Life’ – a mythical ingredient that would grant them access to the ‘fountain of youth’ and eternal life. At this point we did not understand about molecular biology and that the ageing process is genetically coded into our DNA. Yet even today, modern genetics is still searching to unlock the key to longer life, and they are concentrating their studies on people who are over 100 years old to try and find out what makes their bodies more resistant to the cellular decay associated with ageing. This includes a study of the skin and how its structure alters over time. This research was unavailable to our ancestors, who instead looked to the natural world to find an ingredient that would work every time to keep the skin looking young and beautiful.

But repeatedly, modern skin care products are looking back to these ancient civilizations for their inspiration, and olive oil has made a comeback as an anti ageing ingredient in many modern products. It seems that the Egyptians were onto something. But rather than basing our trust in these new anti wrinkle creams on mythology and esoteric reasons, science is now playing a major part in a multi-million pound industry to find a modern day ‘Elixir of Life’. Much of it is pseudo-science, designed to part a society desperate to maintain its youthful looks from its cash. But in amongst all the pepto-thingies and ‘here comes the science’ advertising that has little or no meaning to the average person in the street, there may be an ancient remedy that actually does condition the skin, reduce the signs of ageing and get rid of those pesky wrinkles. Whilst nobody can beat the clock, perhaps by looking back at the ancient civilizations, we can slow it down a bit.

Herbal and Ayurvedic Remedies for Dark Under Eye Circles

November 24, 2010 by

Dark circles are formed under the eyes. They are dark blemishes that surround the eyes and thus spoil the appearance of the face. They are also known as eye circles and are sometimes referred to in slang as bags under the eyes.

There are many reasons why dark circles may occur. Knowing these reasons will help to avoid them and thus get protection from these ungainly blemishes on the face. These causes are:-

1. Lack of sleep

2. Extreme tiredness

3. Improper diet and nutrition

4. Stress

5. Hormonal problems

6. Advancing age

7. Hyper-pigmentation of the skin

8. Exposure to heat and sunlight

9. Excessive intake of some drugs

Dark circles are caused due to vitiation in the vata and the pitta doshas. These are the elements governing the air and the fire elements in the human body respectively. It has been found that yoga is very beneficial in reducing dark circles. Pranayama and shavasana help the mind to de-stress. Such asanas are prescribed for people with dark circles.

Once the dark circles have appeared, it is very difficult to get rid of them. There are many cosmetic creams in the market that claim to eliminate dark circles, but dark circles can be only removed by a healthy lifestyle. There are some ways in which dark circles can be reduced. These methods are mentioned in this article.

(1) Useful Herbs/Plants in the Treatment of Dark Circles

1. Apple (Malus domestica)

Apples contain tannin which helps in reducing dark circles. In addition, apples also contain potassium and the water soluble vitamins B and C which can replenish the lost nutrients in the skin under the eyes.

2. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)

The cucumber is a very cool vegetable. For this reason it is used widely as a treatment for eye circles. The cool juices of the cucumber help the eyes to de-stress, which makes the dark circles disappear within a few days.

3. Potato (Solanum tuberosum)

The starchy content of the potatoes helps in the treatment of dark circles. Both the peel and thin slices of the potato can be placed over the eyes to get good results.

4. Rose (Rosa cordifolia)

No other treatment for dark circles is as common as the extract of rose petals, known as rose water or gulaab jal. Rose water soothes the eyes and removes their redness. It also rejuvenates the skin around the eyes. This reduces the eye circles. Rose water can completely eliminate the dark circles if used persistently for a few weeks.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Dark Circles

Keep your diet very healthy if you want to get rid of your dark circles. Many Ayurvedic doctors would agree that the first treatment of dark circles begins with correcting the diet. The diet must not be too dry. Use lots of water in the preparation of dishes in the form of gravies, daals, soups, etc. Cook your food in a little fat to reduce the vata vitiation. Drink lot of water throughout the day. Also consume fresh fruits that have high water contents.

(3) Home Medications

1. Cucumber is very beneficial in reducing dark circles due to its cooling effects. Cut thin slices of cucumber and place them directly over the eyes. Keep them for about fifteen minutes. Do this every night before going to bed. It will give a restful sleep and will reduce the dark circles in the morning. Cucumber slices are very beneficial when the dark circles are caused due to stress.

2. Another simple method is to dip cotton pieces in water and place them over the eye. Here water is the treating agent. Its coolness soothes the eyes. A better effect can be achieved by using rose water instead of simple water.

3. The peel of a potato can also be placed on the eye. Do this every night before going to sleep. Since potato peels can attach better to the eyelids, this method is preferable over cucumber slices.

4. Almond oil massage is beneficial in case you are suffering from dark circles. Ideally, the massage must be done at night time, and the eyes must not be opened after that until morning. So, this must be done when going to bed.

5. Prepare a paste of nutmeg in milk. Apply this on and around the eyelids before going to bed.

6. You can even put used tea bags around the eyes to get good results. The alkaloids in the tea help to renew the skin around the eyes.

The most important thing to remember is that you must not stress your eyes too much. This is a sure way of getting dark circles. Even when you are working throughout the day, take some time out (even ten minutes will do) to wash your eyes with cool water and then keep them shut. Do not think about any stressful thoughts when your eyes are shut. Divert your mind in thinking about beautiful things in nature. When you open your eyes after the ten minutes are over, you will feel as refreshed as though you have had a siesta.

Lately the medical community has been engaged in debating about a new branch of knowledge called anti-aging, which deals with the methods to help decelerate the process of aging. In addition to the many lifestyle propositions, based on the most recent scientific findings, one of the techniques of antiaging, for both women and men, is herbal treatment. The objective of this kind of treatment is to reclaim vitality through the application of herbal medicines, and through trace elements and vitamins.

The total blueprint of herbal anti aging treatment is to liven up the body’s inner intelligence and in that way regenerate balance to the cardinal modes of psychological and physiological operation. Such cardinal forms or modes of intelligence in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine are called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. According to this system, the secret to productive anti aging is to maintain Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in perfect equilibrium. Health and longevity can be increased by backing up Kapha, thereby enhancing stability and lubrication and minifying Vata, resultantly lessening dryness and unsettled state of mind and body.

Rasayana is an exceptional ayurvedic anti ageing treatment. This method involves two faculties namely, kutipravesika and vatatapika. Kutipravesika attributes itself to restricting the person being treated in a tiny shelter with just one small door. The system also requires small holes instead of windows. The duration of stay for each patient depends on the character of a specific illness and its severeness. While being treated, the patient is observed and given appropriate rasayana, after which there is sheer renovation of health and protection from illness. In the vatatapika section of the process, the patient can have the appropriate rasayana without strict restrictions.

Whatever be the manner of either rasayana application, the target, nonetheless, is one and the same – to save the patient from illness and further youthful lengthy life. A formula that nurtures the different facets of the human skin and has a total anti ageing impact is named vayasthapana, which literally implies “conserving youthfulness” or “checking age”. There is a bunch of herbaceous plants that are used in creams that help in creating an age-containing effect. Gotu Kola is a well known ayurvedic anti aging herb. Scientific studies also affirms that Gotu Kola has an anti aging impact, and particularly it raises collagen synthesis.

The condition of our skin is a perfect reflector of the overall wellness of our body, showing what is occurring inside. Then again, skin is the all important identity of out appearance and some interpersonal and societal reactions. For these causes skin needs continuant care for appearing younger. In spite of the fact that skin is crucial for your look, it is seldom perceived until it is tainted. It is really critical to maintain the skin salubrious to avoid the onset of any skin irritations or diseases.

In Ayurvedic herbal treatment, anti aging means principally keeping up a healthy body into geezerhood and bringing down the operation of aging, degeneration and depreciation. The objective of herbal anti-aging treatment is to aim for a healthy aging mode, and to maintain both mind and body working at optimum level, so the treasures of old age can be relished with peace of mind and vitality. A more suited term for Ayurvedic herbal anti-aging is ‘good aging’ since the gains of age, maturity and experience must not be refused. To assist people reach the said goal, seasoned healers do many Ayurvedic herbal anti aging treatments that could be distinguished as antiaging in the natural way.

Everyone in the world wants to look young. Unfortunately, we cannot stop the aging process. Once you cross your 3′s you will start to feel that there is no hope to be beautiful anymore. Or is it?

Actually, there are many ways in which you can feel younger and look more beautiful. You have to take care of yourself, both from the inside and the outside. Most men and women don’t realize that there are many simple anti ageing treatments that they can use in order to avoid or slow down aging .

There are 2 main causes of anti aging:

1. Natural : This type of aging is hereditary and depends on the genes & hence it is quite difficult to prevent.

2. Un-natural : This is caused by the extrinsic factors like exposure to sun, over drinking, bad eating habits etc.

While comparing both the types of aging, you can come to a conclusion that you can prevent the second type of ageing.

Here are some tips for the prevention of un-natural aging :

1) You should maintain a diet that’s low in sugar and fat.

2) You need to consume lots of water, ie 5- 8 glasses of water daily.

3) You should exercise regularly. This will help you look younger.

In addition, you may consider the following anti-aging treatment products:-

1. Anti ageing treatment (Creams) :

People whose skin is always exposed to the sun are at more risk since the sun’s rays can cause wrinkles on the face. Thus, wrinkle creams have become one of the major anti aging treatment products today. Scores of anti ageing wrinkle creams have entered the anti-aging market. But it doesn’t mean that all these creams are good. The introduction of many “herbal and ayurvedic creams” has made it difficult for the women to decide on which product is right for them. Thus, this Anti ageing treatment will be a boon for the coming generation.

3. Anti ageing treatment (Copper peptide treatment):

One of the anti aging treatments that are boomingtoday is the copper peptide treatment. Copper is normally found in trace quantities in our cells. When this is converted into copper peptide results in the skin regeneration . Since copper is an anti oxidant, it damages free radicals leaving a better skin.

4. Anti ageing treatment through vitamin tablets:

We need anti ageing vitamins to suppress the free radicals. They are the protective force against free radicals. Let us explore some important anti ageing vitamins :-

i) Vitamin C – It lowers the blood pressure . It fights cold and flu. It is also a very good anti aging treatment agent.

ii) Vitamin E – It is a good supplement of anti oxidants. It helps to maintain healthy cells and acts as a good skin and hair repair agent.

iii)Vitamin A – It is a very good anti oxidant that neutralizes the free radicals in the body which causes tissue and cellular damage. It also has retinol which helps to keep the skin and eyes moist.

Apart from using vitamins as an anti ageing treatment, it is always better to go with proper eating habits too.

5) HGH or human growth hormone is another product that you can opt for to fight aging. This is the latest in the field of anti aging treatment and its effects have been proven in many cases too. Effortless Beauty – The Ayurvedic Approach To Beauty

October 11, 2010 by

Ayurveda does just the opposite – it expands the possibilities of beauty, helping you find and cultivate true beauty in yourself, in others , and in the world around you. In Ayurveda , beauty is neither a mask you hide behind , someone else’s idea, nor the latest trend. It is the outer reflection of the inner you, so it is ultimately honest, individual and timeless.

As my patients have discovered, Ayurvedic tools and techniques used to cultivate beauty are effortless in the sense that their actions are going with the flow of nature-not against it. The practice involve discipline, but it is discipline with a great deal of pleasure. These practices are enjoyable themselves- eating good food, inhaling delicious aroma, enjoying oil massages, — and lots more. Ayurveda’s unique perspective helps you see yourself in a fresh, new light and provides you with the joy, and fulfillment of making a commitment to your self that exemplifies the love you feel for yourself and your body.

Why do we care about beauty? Why do so many of my patients come in with complaints not only about fatigue, digestive imbalances, insomnia but also about pimples, wrinkles, and stubborn pounds that are irritating to daily happiness. Are we being self indulgent or obsessive? No, definitely not. We human have sought physical beauty and delighted in its blessing since the dawn of time. The urge to be thought beautiful and desirable, to groom and decorate and embellish ourselves to achieve that goal , stem from a deep primal need to be noticed , accepted, and loved.

Does health create beauty or beauty create health? The answer is both. Just as mind and body are so inextricably connected as to be one and the same thing, so are health and beauty intrinsically related. Effortless Beauty by Dr. Helen Thomas gives the complete ayurvedic approach to take for each body type.

Medicine Treatments of Ayurveda For Aging – Better Than the Fountain of Youth in Florida

Discovering the medicine treatments of Ayurveda herbal remedies is like Ponce de Leon finding the Fountain of Youth in Florida. The Fountain of Youth is the legendary spring of water that offers youth restoring properties to anyone who drinks of its’ waters. Ayurveda is much more beneficial because it uses the basic principles of nature to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual’s body, mind, and spirit in perfect balance with nature. Ayurvedic medicine is the science of life, prevention, and longevity. It is the oldest and most holistic and all–encompassing medical system available.

There will be 1.2 billion people aged 60 and over in the year 2025 and will increase to 2 billion by the year 2050, according to the World Health Organization. As the population ages, the impact of Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, and other chronic age–related diseases are becoming the leading causes of disability.

Aging is an accrual of damage to cells, tissues and organs over a lifetime. Drugs and surgery are the hope of Western medicine to deal with the problems related to aging. Sadly, these results are fickle and inconsistent. Not to mention that drugs cause dangerous side effects! Ayurveda, the science of life, uses the principles of nature to maintain health in a person by keeping the body, mind, and spirit in perfect balance with nature.

Vatas are 5,000 year old Indian books on which these principals are based. Ayurvedic medicines are based on ancient wisdom which gives word to exercise, diet, mental conditioning, and relaxation to help us all reach our peak and overcome aging concerns in safe, natural ways. Ayurvedic Treatments for Arthritis: Old is New

July 19, 2010 by

Sometimes what modern man considered the “old ways” of healing have a way of coming round to be known as the “new way”.

Such is the case with Ayurvedic Medicine Treatments for Arthritis. Based on ancient Brahmin Indian treatments 3,000 to 4,000 years old, this holistic approach to helping sufferers cope with arthritis is enjoying a re-found popularity. The World Health Organization agrees Ayurvedic treatment is a useful traditional health science.

As with other holistic systems of healing, Ayurveda recognizes that all people are unique, and thus even though they may evince the same outward symptoms, the path to their healing differs.

This means the remedy for your arthritis pains and suffering is different than those of your neighbor or friend.

Several recent studies in the United States, India and elsewhere have confirmed Ayurvedic treatments as a means to natural arthritic pain relief.

The American College of Rheumatology conducted a double-blind test trial of 90 people with osteoarthritis. The study show 50 percent of the patients who took a combination of tumeric, frankincense (Boswellia) ginger and ashwagandha had significant improvements with pain relief as well as mobility. In contrast, only 20 percent of their placebo group reported any arthritis pain relief.

In another double-blind study of 182 people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, the use of the same anti-inflammatory herbs brought about “marked improvement” in pain relief, reduction of stiffness and the severity of swollen joints and brought improvement in their overall ability to function.

A study in India considered the results of the combining of frankincense, tumeric, zinc and ashwagandha as natural arthritic pain relief. (Though the herbs have some medicinal powers on their own for the treatment of arthritis and other joint pain, Ayurvedic medicine has found combining them for better results.)

In the 1991 study, 42 osteoarthritis sufferers who were treated with the Ayurveda herbs in concert, showed “a significant reduction in pain and disability”.

And although researchers say it can take up to a month for Ayurveda herb usage to produce positive results, the effects of the herb use for arthritis pain relief can last for several years without the need to increase dosage!

To help you heal without the addition of more medication, which may bring with them own complications, requires more than popping yet another pill. It requires attention to the mind and body. Both medically-trained physicians and Ayurvedic practitioners agree a holistic approach to the treatment of Arthritis is apt to bring about the best and longest-lasting results.

To help assist your natural arthritis pain relief, in addition to Ayurvedic treatments, it’s also imperative to work at improving your lifestyle habits and practices. Here are some examples:

*Add meditation and occasional fasting to your Ayurvedic routine

*Exercise often – but avoid those that cause you pain. Start and progress slowly, but do it daily.

*Reduce caffeine intake

*Don’t’ smoke. If you do, quit – if necessary, recall American humorist Mark Twain’s advice, “Habit is habit, and not to be flung out of the window…but coaxed downstairs a step at a time.”

*Reduce your stress and anxiety using simple breathing techniques and physical exercise.

Your arthritis can be managed through natural pain relief by using ayurvedic treatment. You won’t know until you try. Why suffer any longer?
