Alternative to Modern Day Medicines

There is a growing movement in the world toward natural or alternative forms of medicine. Gone are the days of people who blindly trust their doctors. These days, with the Internet at our fingertips, anyone can learn about the harmful effects of modern day treatments and medications.
Many of these treatments are worse than the cures. Chemotherapy just about tops that list, but many of the FDA approved, over the counter medications can be just as harmful. The next time you see an advertisement for any medication on TV, listen at the end when they rush through all the side effects. You will hear everything from one end of the spectrum to the other, from dizziness and watery eyes and nose all the way through liver failure and death. And these are drugs and medications approved by the FDA.
Even if you can withstand the side effects, many of these so called safe drugs can cause severe liver and kidney damage, ulcers, tumors and worse. By the time you have taken care of one problem, you may have created one or more additional problems.
Now, let us briefly take a look at some alternative treatments. Homeopathy and Ayurvedic treatments can take a long time and they do not work on everyone. Additionally, you have to be fairly diligent with your dosage(s), especially with Homeopathy or you just will not get the results. The extended time these remedies can take may also wind up costing you a small fortune.
Likewise, extended treatments of Acupuncture and Massage and/or physical therapy may become costly. Herbs are not always safe to take long term. Cleansing regimens can do more harm than good if done incorrectly.
I can continue to list the various treatments and some pros and cons, but in the end that really will not help you in actually receiving your desired health benefits. Also, please do not misunderstand me, the above alternative medicine treatments are extremely useful and have their places. I use several of them sporadically throughout the year for maintenance and tune ups to my own health.
So what is the alternative to modern and alternative medicines and treatments? The answer is so simple, it will astound you. Ready? The answer is you. You have within yourself the ability to eradicate any disease, illness or imperfection. Yes you do. It is called your subconscious mind.
Did you know that your subconscious mind controls about 95% of your body’s functions? Without you even being consciously aware of what is happening, your subconscious is controlling your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, nerve center, most brain activity, autonomic reflexes, and more. You usually do not have to think about telling your lungs to move in and out to breathe, or to tell your arm and hand to pick up a glass of water, or duck out of the way of a baseball that is heading straight at you, you just do it. That is your autonomic nervous system functioning correctly.
Imagine telling your subconscious that you want your immune system to be stronger and you want a higher production of stem cells. Perhaps you want to alleviate pain, PMS symptoms, hair loss or fatigue. Some people would love to be able build lean muscle mass without working out; others may want to lose weight safely and effectively. Still other may have depression, self esteem, and intimacy issues. All you have to do is tell your subconscious mind to take care of those issues for you and sit back and let it happen.
OK, so that is not so easy to do. Or is it? With the help of a unique, proprietary technology called Rapid Data Transfer, you can tell your subconscious mind to help you achieve amazing, positive results in as little as 1-3 months. The technology is incorporated into a program called PATHS. It truly is an incredible breakthrough in the self help and self improvement industry. The best part is almost anyone can benefit from this new technology simply by watching a short video theater presentation on a computer once a week, right in the comfort of your own home!
PATHS is the one truly safe alternative because you are using the power of your own mind to instruct your body to heal itself physically, mentally and spiritually. Every so often a new technology emerges to benefit everyone unconditionally, PATHS is that and more.
To your continued health, happiness, and prosperity,

Alternative Medicine, Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers Relief
March 29, 2011 by Ayurvedic
Filed under Alternative Medicine, Home Improvement
The open sores which appear in the mouth are called as mouth ulcers. They are white or yellow in color, and are generally accompanied with a sharp pain, which is felt most when the person is eating. The pain is quite acute when salty or spicy food passes over the ulcer. Mouth ulcers can occur anywhere in the mouth – on the inner surface of the cheeks, lips, tongue, palate and at the base of the gums.
Mouth ulcers are caused due to vitiation of the pitta dosha. The condition is called as Mukha Paaka in Sanskrit. There are several factors that can cause it. Some of them are as follows:-
1 Wrong diet
2 Digestive problems such as constipation
3 Hormonal imbalances, especially during puberty in girls
4 Anemia
5 Constant stress
6 Hereditary factors
7 Infection of the herpes simplex virus
8 Irritation by some chemicals, tobacco and alcohol
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Mouth Ulcers
1. Banyan (Ficus religiosa)
A decoction of the bark of the banyan tree reduces the pain caused by mouth ulcers.
2. Chebulic Myrobalan (Terminalia chebula)
The chebulic myrobalan is a component of the Triphala choorna, of which the amalaki is also an essential component. Its bark helps in reducing the pain of the ulcers. It also helps in correcting the constipation problems which causes ulcers.
3. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum)
Fenugreek leaves help in the treatment of mouth ulcers. An infusion of these leaves is used for gargling. Fenugreek is a strong agent on the ulcers. Hence it is used as a remedy for recurrent ulcers.
4. Henna (Lawsonium alba)
Henna is a cooling herb. It can provide a soothing effect on the ulcers. It is used with water for gargling.
5. Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis)
The Indian gooseberry or amalaki has a dual effect on ulcers. Used as a gargling solution, it can relax the pain of the ulcers. Secondly it can deal with constipation, which is generally one of the important factors causing ulcers in the mouth.
6. Kattha (Acacia catechu)
Kattha is an extract of the Acacia catechu plant, known commonly in the west as the catechu plant. This has astringent properties. It has a special place in Ayurvedic medicine in oral treatment. It is used in many forms for the treatment of ulcers.
7. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
Licorice is used for several oral and dental problems. It is a component of several toothpaste brands. Its stem and leaves cleanse the mouth effectively. Apart from controlling the sores, it can refresh the mouth and cleanse the teeth.
8. Turmeric (Curcuma longa)
Turmeric is also a cooling agent. It helps in relieving mouth ulcers. It is mixed in water and the suspension is used for gargling.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Mouth Ulcers
Digestive problems are the leading causes for mouth ulcers. If an oral ulcer occurs suddenly, then it could be due to excessive heat generated in the body due to consuming hot food.
1. When ulcers occur in the mouth, hot and spicy food must be stopped immediately. These will aggravate the pains of the ulcers. Caffeine and tea must also be stopped.
2. Consuming more greens in the diet helps to be ever-protected from ulcers. Greens also provide the necessary fiber for the movement of bowels. This prevents constipation.
3. It is advisable to stop fatty food – especially that which contains oils – till the time the ulcers have healed.
4. Papaya is a very good fruit to be consumed when you have mouth ulcers. It soothes the mouth ulcers and helps in their quick recovery. Yam is also beneficial for mouth ulcer problems.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Mouth Ulcers
Ayurveda prescribes the Irimedadi tailam for local application over the mouth ulcers. It gives relief from the pains and assists in speedy recovery. Instead of Irimedadi tailam, camphor powder can also be applied on the ulcers.
(4) Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers
1. Grind the leaves of the Indian plum (jambula). Exude their paste in water and gargle with this water. It will give immediate relief from the pains of the mouth ulcers.
2. Gargling with the water of the adulsa (Justicia adhadota) also brings about an immediate relief from the mouth ulcer pains.
3. Mix the peel of a lemon with white catechu. Grind them into a very fine paste. Apply this directly on the ulcer. The ulcer will get treated almost immediately.
4. Take two to three leaves of the guava tree and some catechu. Chomp them together. This will cure even the most persistent of ulcers within a few days.
5. Mix some catechu in water till it gets a pasty consistency. Apply this paste on the ulcers.
6. Mix a ripe banana in curds that have been prepared from cow’s milk. Eat this as a dessert.
It will bring about a permanent solution to the oral ulcer problems.

Know the Best Way to Cure Bad Breath Problem
March 23, 2011 by Ayurvedic
Bad breath – medically known as halitosis – is an extremely embarrassing problem that is actually present in most people over the world today. A person suffering from bad breath can often become a subject of ridicule. Hence it is very important to get rid of this problem. There are several products in the market ranging from toothpastes to mouth fresheners, but they can only provide temporary relief to the problem. Ayurveda has the potential to solve the problem from its roots.
The mouth is the place of the kapha dosha. Hence an imbalance in the kapha dosha of the person manifests itself in the form of bad breath. In order to treat the problem of bad odor forever, a person will need to keep his/her kapha in the proper balance. In most instances, oral hygiene is spoken along with dental hygiene. Hence most treatments that are beneficial for the teeth are also beneficial for keeping mouth odors at bay.
In an indirect way, even the pitta dosha is responsible. When the agni (digestive fire) of the pitta dosha is vitiated, then the person would have an improper digestion. This would lead to bad breath emanating from the mouth.
When a person has bad breath, what is actually happening is that bacteria are living in the mouth, which are decomposing the residues of the food and releasing sulfur. The bad breath is a result of this liberation of sulfur. The regions in which the bacteria live could be in the interspaces between the teeth, in the cavities of the teeth or on the tongue. In extreme cases, there could be pus formation in the gums (scurvy like conditions due to deficiency of vitamin C). This could cause severe offensive odor and the person could well become a social outcast.
Let us check out the various methods available in Ayurveda to treat the problem of bad odor.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Bad Breath
® Babul (Acacia arabica)
The babul is actually useful for the treatment of teeth cavities. Strong teeth means less cavities; and this will mean no bad breath. Simply chewing on the fresh bark of the babul tree will make the teeth stronger and arrest any bad breath that is emanating from them.
® Banyan (Ficus bengalensis)
If the aerial roots of the banyan are used to rub on the teeth (much as a toothbrush does), then the bacteria on the teeth would be killed. This would reduce the bad breath to a great extent.
® Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)
Again, clove is actually used for dental treatment. Clove is perhaps the most commonly used herb in dental treatments; it is one of the chief ingredients of many toothpastes. But due to its pungent taste, it can also cure the kapha vitiation which will eventually fight the bad breath.
® Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)
Chewing a few leaves of the holy basil will treat all kinds of mouth infections. Thus bad breath will become a thing of the past.
® Pepper (Piper nigrum)
Pepper is considered to be a very excellent agent in treating foul breath. A poultice of pepper is made with rock salt and rubbed on the teeth. When this is done on a daily basis, almost all kinds of oral and dental problems will be brought under control.
® Sandalwood (Santalum album)
Sandalwood is a very effective herb in the vitiation of the pitta dosha that can bring about improvement of the gum health.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Bad Breath
® The first important thing with halitosis is to check is whether the digestion is going on properly or not. Reduce the consumption of all foods that are difficult to digest. Include more fruits and green leafy vegetables in the diet as they can aid digestion.
® Flavor your food with spices such as cardamom and clove. These will help to combat the bacteria developed in the oral cavity.
® Drink lots of water and citrus fruit juices during the day.
® Gargle your mouth after everything you eat. Vigorous gargling is required to remove the food particles accumulated in the interspaces of the teeth or their cavities. If gargling is not enough, brush and floss.
® Do not leave residues of chocolates and sugary foods in the mouth. Wash the mouth immediately after eating such things.
(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Bad Breath
Tablets of Khadiradi, Eladi and Lavangadi can be chewed about three to four times a day. This refreshes the mouth repeatedly and also has an astringent effect on the bacteria in the mouth.
(4) Home Medications
® The teeth and gums must be massaged with a mixture of honey and fine charcoal powder once a day.
® Keep the peel of a single pomegranate in the shade and let it dry completely. Do not keep it in direct sunlight or it will dry out the vitamins. Grind the dried peel to a fine powder. Put three grams of the powder in a glass of water and boil it. Gargle with this water. Repeat this for about a month.
® Dried coriander when chewed reduces the foul odor from the mouth. This is a good method to reduce the bad breath due to garlic and onion.

Natural Remedies For Adrenal Fatigue
February 21, 2011 by Ayurvedic
Adrenal fatigue syndrome is usually brought on by chronic physical, mental or emotional stress that causes the adrenal glands to overproduce hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, ultimately resulting in down-regulation and exhaustion.
Misunderstood and ignored by traditional medical practitioners, adrenal fatigue was not an accepted term until Dr.Wilson wrote the book, Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, to bring this syndrome to the notice of the medical community.
Although traditional medical practitioners do not recognize it as a valid syndrome caused by chronic stress, herbal and alternative practitioners have a number of remedies to treat a range of non-specific symptoms and address the root cause of stress by helping our bodies adapt to stressful situations better.
Many of these herbs are adaptogens herbs, used to regulate endocrine hormones and the immune system and buffer the effects of stress by helping the body adapt to it better. They can down-regulate an over-functioning system or boost and stimulate an under-functioning one to help the body reach a balance. Here are some natural remedies commonly used to treat the symptoms of adrenal fatigue syndrome:
Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)
This herb is native to North America and known for its calming effects on the nervous and muscular-skeletal system. It was traditionally used by North American Indians as therapy for nervous tension, anxiety, convulsions, and adrenal fatigue symptoms. The flavonoids and amino acids in skullcap are thought to be responsible for its relaxant action.
Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea)
Also know as Golden Root or Roseroot, Rhodiola grows in cold regions of the world and has been used for centuries to cope with the cold climate and stressful life. It is an adaptogen and has been shown to boost physical and mental performance, and diminish fatigue.
Rhodiola is used to improve mood, alleviate depression. It works by regulating serotonin and dopamine levels and has an effect on the mood-regulating chemicals known as endorphins. In laboratory animals, it was shown to effectively prevent changes caused by stress such as those that affect appetite, physical activity, weight gain and the estrus cycle.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb that has been used for thousands of years by Ayurvedic practitioners in India. The root contains flavonoids and withanolides that help regulate physiological function in the hormonal and nervous system.
Ashwagandha can alleviate the effects of stress, boost memory and cognitive function as these are often impaired during adrenal fatigue and burnout. It has been used to combat fatigue, improve stamina, and enhance immune response and adrenal function.
Green tea
Green tea contains a substance known as L-theanine (gamma-ethylamino-L-glutamic acid). This unique, neurologically-active amino acid is a relaxant and mood enhancer. It acts by creating a sense of relaxation created by the direct stimulation of alpha brain waves-a state achieved in meditation. It is also used by the body to manufacture the neurotransmitter, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), that influences the levels of dopamine and serotonin.
Natural and herbal products that balance endocrine function and diminish the effects of stress help those recovering from adrenal burnout and fatigue. Taking a good supplement that contains a number of these herbs, and following a healthy lifestyle will help recover from adrenal fatigue and get you back on your feet again.
Adrenal fatigue supplements are a safe, effective and natural way to combat stress and prevent adrenal fatigue syndrome. For doctor-formulated supplements that help your body cope with the demands of modern living and promote optimal wellness and balance, visit http://www.goodelements.com

Alcoholism – Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies, Symptom of Alcoholism and Other Treatments

Alcoholism is defined as an irresistible urge to consume alcohol. People suffering from alcoholism are very well aware of the dangerous effects alcohol could have on their bodies, but still they are unable to resist the urge to consume it. They will usually drink beyond acceptable limits and will be in an inebriated state most often, causing embarrassment and inconvenience to the people with them.
Most people who consume alcohol have more than they can manage. This is seen in alcohol drinkers who lose control of their senses when they have one drink too many. Such an overstepping of limits is called as alcohol abuse. People who abuse alcohol are having more alcohol than their body allows them, but they have not yet come totally under the control of their alcohol habit. However, if they continue drinking for long, then they will not be able to resist alcohol and will become totally addicted to it. This situation is called as alcoholism.
Both alcohol abuse and alcoholism are social vices apart from being detrimental to the person’s health. They can be eliminated only by exercising control and being determined.
Why is Alcoholism dangerous?
Ethyl alcohol – the alcohol which is used in all alcohol products – is a liquid that immediately dissolves in the human blood. Hence when alcohol is consumed, it doesn’t take much time to reach all parts of the human body. Due to this, the nervous system of the person is affected and he/she may lose responsiveness to external stimulus. This is when the person is said to be inebriated.
Constant alcoholism will interfere with the functioning of all the vital organs of the body. The major organs affected are the liver, brain, heart and kidneys.
Liver is perhaps the most seriously affected in the long run. With prolonged alcoholism, the liver may develop cirrhosis, which is scarring of the liver tissue. Once cirrhosis sets in, it is very difficult to return the health back to normal.
In the stomach, alcohol can cause several gastric problems which may interfere with digestion. At the same time, each time a person has alcohol, it numbs his/her nervous system. In due course, the person may lose some or all of the fundamental senses.

Acidity – Herbs and Ayurvedic Remedies, Acidity Symptom and Other Treatments
February 7, 2011 by Ayurvedic
What is Acidity?
The human stomach contains gastric glands which are responsible for the proper digestion of food in it. Gastric glands achieve the digestion by secreting various acids, the chief of which is the hydrochloric acid. These acids are aided by various enzymes of the stomach in bringing about digestion. The level of acids in the human stomach is generally controlled; but for some reason if the level of acids increases beyond the
normal levels, then the condition is known as acidity.
Hence, acidity is the condition in which there is an excess secretion of acid within the stomach. Other names for acidity are hyperacidity or acid dyspepsia.
Why is Acidity caused?
The stomach is equipped with these acids in order to be able to digest the food. The acids are released when foods enter the stomach. However some foods are difficult to digest than the others. For such foods, the stomach needs to secrete more acids. Continuous secretions of such acids could lead to acidity in the stomach.
This excessive production of acids could be made higher due to various factors. Ulcers in the stomach are one of the commonest causes in increasing acid production.
People with stomach cancers will also have acidity problems as one of the symptoms. For this reason, acidity should not be ignored if it lasts for a long period of time, or if the person is older.
There is a condition known as the acid-reflux complex, due to which the stomach acids are refluxed back to the food pipe. When this happens, a prominent sour taste is felt in the mouth, and a belch might occur.
What are the Symptoms of Acidity?
When a person has acidity in the stomach, there can be a vast difference in the kinds of symptoms observed. For some people it may be a simple bellyache, but for others, it could lead to days of restlessness with continuous cramps in the stomach.
In fact restlessness is the most common symptom of acidity, followed by nausea and vomiting. There is a sour taste felt in the mouth, which is due to the excess deposition of the acids. Sometimes there are sour belches and passing off wind. Other digestive problems like constipation and indigestion will also occur. In some cases, stiffness is felt in the stomach.
How can Acidity be avoided?
A proper dietary pattern is the best thing in order to avoid acidity. The following tips must be followed:-

Is There Any Treatment For Bereavement?
February 5, 2011 by Ayurvedic
Question:
A close friend’s husband lost his life recently, at a young age. She is finding it very hard to cope and I wondered if you had any suggestions.
Answer:
Bereavement is characterised by sadness, tearfulness, insomnia, a sinking feeling and loss of appetite. Sometimes there is also shock, which is a state of daze, accompanied by physical and nervous breakdown. Most emotional problems can be dealt with using physical and/or psychological therapy. The physical approach includes drugs, exercise, yoga (which helps breath control) and martial arts (which help to throw the energy outwards). Psychological therapies include counselling, psychotherapy, hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (a self-help psychological therapy that uses words to dampen down emotions). Meditation, autogenics, chanting and talking with friends and family are also beneficial.
If people are in shock, only psychotropic drugs will have an immediate effect – these must, be prescribed by a doctor. Natural preparations, which have a milder effect include herbal valeriana ( 10 to 15 drops in ¼ cap of water twice daily for up to ten days; you, will need to see a qualified herbalist for guidance) and homoeopathic ignatia, 30 potency (2 tablets three times daily for three to seven days). If you don’t sleep well, try the Ayurvedic preparation Brento (1 tablet at night for a month).
The acute phase immediately after the bereavement is usually stage-managed well. Everyone is there for the funeral: they cry, talk and pray together. The chronic phase which follows is often when feelings truly sink in. The bereaved can feel so sad, depressed and inert that they are unable to help themselves. Physicians can do little at this time, but the support of family and friends is vital, until the person’s mood begins to lift and the healing process can take over.
Going away to a beautiful, remote place can help enormously. I have taken several people in deep bereavement on my Himalayan health holidays. They walk at high altitudes (which make their bodies work efficiently), do yoga, I sleep well and stay with people who live simply. They return to their lives with new hope and are able to cope better.
WAKE – UP FOOD
Ideally breakfast should be substantial and dinner light in religious practice, you break your fast with fruits (not citrus fruits, because they are too acidic), then add a combination of proteins and complex carbohydrates.
I strongly recommend eating porridge or muesli. (Some of the proprietary cereals such as bran flakes cause a lot of gas due to their high fiber.) Dried nuts are difficult to digest so it’s preferable to soak them for 12 to 24 hours before eating. Ideally, eat about five to eight peeled almonds, soaked for 24 hours at room temperature (not in the fridge) at the beginning of breakfast. Leaving the almonds for that time allows them to germinate so that the oil in the endosperm of the nut is converted into easily digested vegetable protein.
Live yoghurt, cottage cheese and poached or boiled eggs are also good sources of protein. It’s better to avoid fried foods: they are heavy to digest and so extra energy has to be diverted to the stomach when you really want to be up and going, with plenty of blood flowing to your brain. Also avoid yeasty products, such as croissants or toast or baps; go for bread or crisp bread made with rye.
CATCH THE DRIFT
The shavasana yoga pose will help you achieve deep relaxation before sleep.
* Lying on your bed with your arms by your sides, close your eyes and relax.
* Gently move your joints shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, knees, ankles and toes – to loosen them.
* Take a deep breath in through four nose, counting slowly to three let your abdomen swell. Pause for a count of three. Now breathe out very gently through your mouth to a count of six, letting your abdomen deflate. Practise this for two nights.
* When this is smooth, try concentration. Focus on the spot between your eyebrows. Imagine you are looking at the rising or sinking sun. Feel the warmth on your forehead; let it peruade your skull. Imagine your brain relaxing, thoughts and stresses evaporating.
* Your eyebrows relax and feel warm, then your eyelids, facial muscles and jaw.
* The warmth spreads through your body, down from the back of your head to your neck, down your spine, seat, thighs, calves, ankles and feet.
* Bring your focus back to your neck muscles. Now let the warmth spread to your shoulders, arms, elbows, fore arms, wrists, fingertips.
* Repeat the whole process several times until your entire body feels calm and relaxed.
* Now imagine your heart is slowing down. Sense your blood pressure dropping.
* Let yourself go into a state of trance. Just be. You should drift into deep slumber.
