Becoming an Ayurvedic Healer

If you wish to become an Ayurvedic healer, you will need to search for a college or university that teaches alternative medicine, including Ayurveda. While there are Ayurvedic medical schools in every major city in India, it is more challenging to find a college that teaches this health model in Western countries.

Ayurveda is an ancient medical theory and practice based on the foundational premises of constitution, balancing the five elements and the essentials of unity of mind, body and spirit. It is a holistic health model, requiring the preventative care of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health through the use of proper diet, life style, exercise, meditation, yoga and herbal remedies. The basic premise of Ayurveda is the idea that your constitution (known as your doshas) must remain in balance, that the body has the ability to heal itself with the proper prompting from foods consumed, scents inhaled, beverages drank, herbs used, exercises performed, meditations honored, and life style choices made. It is the primary health care system honored in India for the last 2,000 years.

As a student in an Ayurvedic heath care practitioner program, you would study classes on Ayurvedic nutrition principles; energy healing, detoxification and panchakarma therapy; manipulative therapy; yoga; meditation; diagnosis of pathological disease and Ayurvedic treatment of pathologies; and basic Ayurvedic lifestyle recommendations, with a special emphasis on the digestive system. If you train in India, your schooling will take on average five years of full time schooling. If you train in a Western country, you may want to get an Allopathic doctor’s degree, then specialize in alternative medicine. This requires quite a bit of schooling, but it will put you in the elite few who have training in both Western and Ayurvedic medicine, putting you at a significant advantage.

Base salaries for Ayurvedic technicians begin at $ 30,000 per year for positions in health clubs and spas. Ayurvedic practitioners with their own medical practices can expect to make over $ 50,000 per year. Because alternative medicine is gaining popularity in Western countries, the outlook for Ayurvedic practitioner job opportunities is very positive.
