Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor that consists of cells from the prostate gland. The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, but it is not believed to be related to benign prostatic hypertrophy. The risk factors for prostate cancer include advancing age, genetics, hormonal influences and environmental factors such as toxins, chemicals and industrial products. The tumor usually grows slowly and remains confined to the gland for many years. Symptoms and signs are more often associated with advanced prostate cancer. Symptoms include a diminished flow of urine, burning urination or blood in the urine. In the late stages, due to the spread of the tumor, other symptoms like back pain, pelvic pain, pain in the abdomen, jaundice, chest pain and cough are seen. Watchful waiting, surgery, radiation therapy, hormonal therapy and cryotherapy are the standard line of treatment for this condition.

The Ayurvedic treatment of prostate cancer is aimed at treating the local tumor and preventing or reducing its spread. Medicines used to treat the local tumor are: Triphala-Guggulu, Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Arogya-Vardhini, Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Erandmool (Ricinus communis), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis), Marich (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Pashandbhed (Bergenia lingulata), Apamarga (Achyranthus aspera), Sahinjan (Moringa pterygosperma), Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica) and Varun (Crataeva nurvala). Medicines like Kanchnaar-Guggulu and Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha are given in high doses to prevent the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body.

Medicines like Suvarna-Parpati, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Trivang-Bhasma, Tamra-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma are used in combination with other medicines to both improve the immune status of the body and to help control the tumor and prevent its spread.

Ayurvedic medicines can be used as additional therapy at any stage of conventional treatment, in order to improve the therapeutic response and the overall survival rate. All such patients should be under the regular care and supervision of an Oncology team.

Basal Cell Carcinoma – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer in humans. BCC tumors typically appear on sun exposed skin, are slow growing, and rarely metastasize. The clinical presentation of this disease includes the nodular, cystic, pigmented, sclerosing and superficial types of BCC. Environmental factors are believed to predispose to this condition and include a prolonged and sustained exposure to sunlight, artificial ultraviolet light, ionizing radiation, arsenic exposure and a contaminated water source. Immunosuppression is also believed to be one of its causes. BCC is seen mostly in old age; and men are affected twice as often as women.

The conventional treatment of BCC consists of removal of the tumor using either surgery or local applications. This usually succeeds in eradicating the tumor. However, there is a 35% chance of developing another tumor within 3 years, and a 50% chance of developing another tumor within 5 years. Therefore, regular and periodic screening of patients is important. Ayurvedic treatment is recommended in patients with a documented recurrence, or in patients having large or deeply infiltrating tumors which have a higher chance of spreading to other parts of the body. In such situations, Ayurvedic treatment is aimed at treating the local tumor and preventing or controlling the spread of the tumor cells. Medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Arogya-Vardhini, Chandraprabha-Vati, Gandhak-Rasayan and Sukshma-Triphala are given in high doses to help eradicate the local tumor. Local applications of medicated pastes can be made using medicines like Triphala (Three fruits), Trikatu (Three pungent herbs), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa) and Yav-Kshar. Some physicians recommend localized blood-letting using leeches in order to achieve a faster therapeutic response.

In order to prevent the spread of the tumor cells to other parts of the body, medicines like Kachnaar-Guggulu, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Gokshuradi-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Guggulu are used. Immuno-modulating therapy is used to help suppress the tumor and to destroy tumor cells present in the blood and lymph. This is done using medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma and Heerak-Bhasma.

Regular and prolonged follow-up is essential to ensure that the cancer has responded adequately to treatment, and also to rule out a recurrence of the condition. Patients and other people prone to BCC are advised to avoid possible potentiating factors like sun exposure, radiation and tanning beds. The regular use of protective clothing and the application of sunscreen are recommended prior to sun exposure.

Cancer of the ovaries is known as ovarian cancer. A personal or family history of cancer, age over 55, older women with no history of pregnancy, and a history of prolonged estrogen treatment, are risk factors for ovarian cancer. Common symptoms include a swollen or bloated abdomen; pressure or pain in the abdomen, pelvis, back or legs; nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation or diarrhea; and feeling very tired all the time. Surgery and chemotherapy, and rarely radiation therapy, are the standard line of treatment for this condition.

Psoriasis – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

August 20, 2010 by

Psoriasis is a common, chronic and recurrent skin condition characterized by patches of itchy, scaly and inflamed skin called plaques. This is an autoimmune disease, where the body’s immune system malfunctions and works against itself. Widespread disease can not only cause physical discomfort, but also severe emotional and psychological disturbance. While currently there is no cure, phototherapy, local applications and oral medications are available which can control the symptoms.

Psoriasis is known as “Eka-Kushtha” in Ayurveda, and the plaques seen in this disease have been likened to the scales seen on the skin of fish. Ayurvedic medicines useful in the treatment of this disease are: Arogya Vardhini, Mahamanjishthadi Qadha, Mahatikta Ghrut, Panchtikta Ghrut Guggulu, Kamdudha, Saarivadyasava, and Khadirarishta.

For local application, Shata Dhout Ghrut, Mahamarichyadi oil and Neem-Karanj oil are used.

Herbal medicines like Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Khadir (Acacia catechu), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), and Jatamansi(Nardostachys jatamansi) are used to treat the skin and blood tissue, and to reduce stress.

Other medicines like Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) and Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba) are used to treat the disturbed immune system of the body.

Some patients have psoriasis in combination with some other disease, e.g. arthritis. Both diseases need to be treated separately, and the patient may need some specialized treatment in addition.

For patients not responding satisfactorily to the above mentioned treatment or those having extensive plaques on the body, Panchkarma cleansing procedures like induced emesis, induced purgation, and periodical blood-letting are advised. Most patients benefit with continued, mild purgation using Triphala(Three fruits), Bahava (Cassia fistula), Gulabkali (Rosa centifolia), Sonamakhi (Argemone mexicana) and Aloe vera.

For the majority of patients with moderate to severe symptoms, several courses of Ayurvedic treatment may be needed to give significant relief. It is advisable to avoid excess salt, spices, meat products, fermented and refrigerated products, tobacco, alcohol, extremes of temperature, and stress. Regular counseling, relaxation techniques, and yogic pranayam (special breathing techniques) are also beneficial.

Sudden Deafness – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

August 18, 2010 by

Sudden deafness, also known as Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL), is a rapid loss of hearing which may occur all at once or over a period of up to three days. SSHL is defined as a loss of at least 30 decibels in three connected frequencies, and usually occurs in only one ear. It may be accompanied by dizziness and ringing in the ears. Only about 10% of affected individuals have known causes which include infections, trauma, immune disorders, circulatory or neurological disorders or drugs toxic to the ears. While most people recover spontaneously within a few weeks, about 15% experience progressively worsening symptoms. Standard management includes removal of the known cause, antibiotics, steroids and inhalation of a mixture of carbon-dioxide and oxygen.

The Ayurvedic treatment of SSHL consists of treating the known cause of the condition and giving symptomatic treatment for the hearing loss. Infections related to the ears and upper respiratory tract can be treated using medicines like Sukshma-Triphala, Sitopaladi-Powder, Tribhuvan-Kirti-Ras, Kamdudha-Ras, Sutshekhar-Ras, Shwas-Kas-Mishran-Ras, Ras-Sindur, Yashtimadhuk (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) and Pippali (Piper longum). Immune disorders can be treated using medicines like Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Pippali, Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Yashtimadhuk, Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Laghu-Malini-Vasant and Madhu-Malini-Vasant.

The treatment of circulatory disorders is important while managing SSHL since it is believed that a reduction in blood circulation to the internal organs in the ears could contribute primarily to the sudden loss of hearing. Medicines are used to remove blood clots, reduce blood toxins and obstruction, and inflammation of the arterial walls. These medicines include Tapyadi-Loh, Ekangveer-Ras, Maha-Yograj-Guggulu, Saarivadi-Vati, Punarnava-Mandur, Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Arogya-Vardhini, Lashunadi-Vati, Suvarna Bhasma, Panchamrut-Parpati, Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Patol (Trichosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus ), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa) and Daruharidra (Berberis aristata). Neurological causes can be treated using medicines like Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani, Maha-Vat-Vidhvans-Ras, Vat-Gajankush-Ras, Vish-Tinduk-Vati and Agni-Tundi-Vati.

In addition, symptomatic treatment for SSHL includes the use of medicines like Kaishor-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu, Saarivadi-Vati, Punarnava-Mandur, Abhrak-Bhasma, Suvarna-Bhasma, Raupya -Bhasma, Mukta-Bhasma and Pathyadi-Qadha. These medicines improve the perfusion of the inner ear and also increase the functioning of the auditory nerve.

A judicious use of Ayurvedic medicines can thus be used to treat refractory patients of SSHL who do not improve spontaneously or with conventional treatment.

Symptoms include painless swelling of lymph glands, persistent fatigue, fever and chills, night sweats, loss of appetite, itching and unexplained weight loss. The exact cause of this condition is not known. The B type of lymph cells are usually involved in this condition. People with a known family history, a past Epstein-Barr infection and a compromised immune system are more at risk for this disease. Like other cancers, this disease is staged from I to V for the sake of treatment, which consists of radiation, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Hodgkin’s disease is aimed at treating the presenting symptoms and improving the immune status of the body. Medicines used in this condition are: Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, and Punarnavadi-Gugulu. The herbal medicine Kanchnaar (Bauhinia variegata), forms the mainstay of treatment for this condition. Medicines which act on the ‘Ras’ and ‘Rakta’ dhatus (tissues) of the body are useful in this condition. These medicines include Indrayav (Holharrhina antidysentrica), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patha (Cissampelos pareira) and Musta (Cyperus rotundus). Manjishta (Rubia cordifolia), Triphala (Three fruits), Trikatu (Three pungent herbs), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) and Dashmool (Ten roots) are also very useful in this condition.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Suvarna Malini Vasant, Abhrak Bhasma and Heerak Bhasma are used to correct immune dysfunction in the body.

Treatment needs to be taken for prolonged periods to get good results. In combination with modern therapy, Ayurvedic treatment can reduce symptoms, improve the immune status of the body and prolong survival. All patients need to be under the regular care and supervision of an Oncology team.

Pulmonary Hypertension – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

August 14, 2010 by

Pulmonary hypertension is a condition in which the pressure in the pulmonary circulation, mainly the pulmonary arteries, becomes elevated. This condition can be either primary (idiopathic), which is not caused by any disease or condition, or secondary, which results from some other underlying cause such as left-sided heart disease, chronic lung disease, pulmonary embolism and auto-immune disorders. The idiopathic or primary type of this condition commonly affects young people and is unusually aggressive and often fatal. Common symptoms include breathlessness, cough, fatigue, chest pain and symptoms of right or left ventricular failure.

The Ayurvedic treatment of pulmonary hypertension is aimed at treating the suspected pathology of the idiopathic variety, or treating the known cause of the secondary type of this condition. Left-sided heart failure may be treated using medicines like Arjunarishta, Dashmoolarishta, Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Gomutra-Haritaki, Drakshasav, Arjun (Terminalia arjuna), Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), Draksha (Vitis vinifera), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica) and Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus). Chronic lung disease can be treated using medicines like Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras, Pippali (Piper longum), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa), Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa) and Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka).

Modern anti-coagulation therapy is indicated where recurrent pulmonary embolism is suspected to be the cause of this condition. Ayurvedic medicines like Triphala (Three fruits), Trikatu (Three pungent herbs), Chavya (Piper retrofractrum), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) and Lashuna (Allium sativum) may be added to the modern therapy in order to prevent recurrent embolism. Auto-immune disorders like scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus need to be treated according to the individual presentation of the disease. However, medicines need to be given to correct the dysfunctional immune-system of the body. These medicines include Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma and Suvarna-Malini-Vasant.

The primary or idiopathic type is believed to be caused by constriction of the pulmonary arteries or biochemical changes in the arterial smooth muscle cells due to a familial genetic abnormality. This condition may be treated using medicines which act on the arterial walls and reduce the constriction or obstruction. These medicines include Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Patol, Saariva, Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta, Kutaj, Amalaki, Haritaki, Nimba, Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica) and Behada (Terminalia bellerica). Medicines like Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Trayodashang-Guggulu and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani can also be used for this purpose.

The prognosis of pulmonary hypertension usually depends upon the severity of the underlying cause. An early diagnosis and initiation of treatment is important in order to improve the overall prognosis. Ayurvedic medicines can be given as additional therapy to modern medicines in order to improve the quality of life and long-term survival.

Cancer of the uterus, also called uterine cancer, is most common in the inner lining of the uterus or endometrium, and hence is also called endometrial cancer. An age over 50, white race, endometrial hyperplasia, a history of having taken hormone replacement therapy or tamoxifen, obesity, and the presence of colorectal cancer, are risk factors for uterine cancer. Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, difficult or painful urination, painful intercourse, and pain in the pelvis area, are common symptoms of this disease.
