With increased acceptance of Ayurveda around the world, a newfound enthusiasm is visible among the entrepreneurs of Kerala to offer Ayurveda treatments to domestic and foreign tourists.

This prompted Government of Kerala to certify the credentials of all Ayurveda centers, Ayurvedic massage centers, Ayurvedic treatment centers across Kerala.

The responsibility of classifying Ayurvedic centers reached Kerala Tourism Department.

The classification of Ayurvedic centers is of two types: Green Leaf and Olive Leaf. Additional qualification marks for obtaining Green Leaf certificate include an in house medicinal plant garden, abundance of greenery, picturesque location and quiet atmosphere.

Acne Remedies – Ayurvedic Treatments May Help You!

ayurvedic treatment19 Acne Remedies Ayurvedic Treatments May Help You!
Acne is perhaps the most dreaded health problem when one is an adolescent. Due to hormonal changes related with puberty and subsequent blood impurities, yellow pus-filled growths appear on the face, which are known as pimples. When this happens, it is said that the person is suffering from acne.

Almost everyone will have pimples at one time or other in their lives. Normally, pimples go away in a couple of days, but if the person does not take enough care, then they could live a lifelong scar behind. Also, pimples can spread on the face quite fast, especially if they burst and their fluids come in contact with healthy skin. Though we know of acne as mostly occurring on the face, it also occurs on the chest, neck and back.

Youngsters put in a lot of effort and money in using medicines for acne available in the market, but with disappointing results. But there are several natural methods in which acne can be prevented. The following is a list of the best methods known to fight acne.

Treatment with Simple Home Remedies

Remedy 1

Wash your face with buttermilk several times a day. This will treat the pimples and also make your face shinier and healthier.

Remedy 2

Take a single seed of a jambula fruit (Indian Plum). Put it in water and rub it thoroughly so that it moistens completely. When the seed is sufficiently wet, then rub it thoroughly on the areas where pimples are present. This remedy is especially beneficial for the pimples that occur in adolescence.

Remedy 3

Just rub the peel of an orange onto the pimples so that its juices moisten them completely. Even this simple procedure done several times a day will reduce and even eliminate the acne.

Remedy 4

Take a ripe pumpkin. Mash it thoroughly and then rub it over the face for a long time. Keep it on the face for fifteen to twenty minutes. You will feel the skin drying up and stretching. This is when you must wash the face and then wipe it dry. Then apply the oil of either coconut or mustard onto the face. Do this for a week on a daily basis. Your acne problem will be solved and the skin of the face will become smooth.

Remedy 5

Mix ten grams of the powder of chana (Cicer arietinum, chana) and ten grams of haldi (Curcuma longa, turmeric) in curds. Apply this paste onto the skin. Wash it off when it dries. Continue this treatment for a week. The acne will clear out.

Remedy 6

Prepare a paste by dissolving the powders of lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), coriander and vacha (Acorus calamus, Sweet Flag) in water. Apply this on the face on a regular basis. It will treat acne and the skin will look as though it had never been afflicted with pimples.

Remedy 7

Roast some mustard seeds, chiraunji (Buchanania latifolia) and a dry orange peel in equal parts. Grind them to a very thin powder. Put a little water to give it a pasty consistency. Apply this paste on the face once everyday. It will solve your acne problem.

Remedy 8

Take some nutmeg and the water of red sandalwood. Break the nutmeg and mash it in the water of the red sandalwood. Applying this water on the face will take care of all the pimples and keep the skin lustrous and soft.

Remedy 9

Take the root of a neem tree and put it in water. Squeeze on the neem root repeatedly in the water with your fingers. When it is sufficiently wet and you feel the juices have begun to exude from it, take the neem root out and rub it on the pimples as though it is a piece of chalk. This is one of the quickest remedies to get relief from pimples.

Remedy 10

One more very simple but effective remedy is to prepare an infusion of the leaves of the tulsi (Ocimum sanctum, Holy Basil) and apply it regularly on the face. The infusion is prepared by taking two to four teaspoons of dried basil leaves in a cupful of water, bring it to a boil and then cool it for use.

Remedy 11

Take a cup of boiled water and add into it turmeric powder and the leaves of tulsi. Let the fumes of this solution come in contact with your face, as though you are having a steam bath. When done, wash the face immediately. This treatment will open up your sweat pores. But washing it immediately, you are removing the grime and the dust which causes acne. Hence this remedy is more of prevention than a cure.

Treatment with Special Ayurvedic Methods

Ayurveda suggests the use of the Kumkumadi lepam to be applied on the face. Before applying this paste, the face must be washed thoroughly. Another internal remedy is to take Saribadyasava in dosages of 15 to 30 milliliters with an equal quantity of water.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Rheumatic Fever

September 13, 2009 by

ayurvedic treatment4 Ayurvedic Treatment For Rheumatic Fever
According to Ayurveda, the mother of natural medicine, Rheumatic fever occurs when the body is filled with rheuma, a form of ama( toxin), which is accompanied by pain in the joints and fever. It is classified under Rheumatic diseases.

When agni or jathar-agni (digestive fire) is disturbed due to various reasons, it results in toxins called ama which subsequently leads to indigestion, constipation etc., which are the root cause of all the body disorders including Rheumatic fever.

Ayurvedic concept of Rheumatic fever can be explained as below.

Ama or toxins are the unmetabolised wastes that have a heavy and sticky quality and Vata is the functional principle of movement in the body. Ama (toxins) are being carried by vata into rasadhatu ( lymph). And the imbalanced agni (digestive fire) and pitta dosha irritates the blood thereby leading to a systematic inflammation and Rheumatic fever.

Ayurveda attributes the following factors to the disturbance of digestive fire/doshic imbalance which indirectly leads to Rheumatic fever.

1. Leading an improper lifestyle or consuming stale foods/cold foods/processed foods/fermented foods etc, which does not suit one’s body constituition.

2. Taking a lot of spicy/ fatty foods/incompatible foods like milk and fruits, fish and milk.

3. Either doing over exercises or not doing any exercises at all.

4. Obesity/genetics/hormonal disorders/irregular eating and sleeping patterns.

5. Malnutrition that occurs due to nutrient deficiency.

6. Mental worries that prolongs for a long time.

Rheumatic fever is named as Amavata in Ayurvedic classicals and main symptoms are fever and joint swelling. Intermittent fever with joint pains manifests throughout the episode. Intially ama will be sedimented in big joints which will affects all joints in due course.

Panchakarma means five therapeutic measures which are undergone for the purification of the body. The simple logic on which Ayurveda operates is that the body has to be purified before preparing it for treating it for the complex health problems.

The pre-purification measures of panchakarma are :

1.Snehana (abhyangam) – oil massage is done which helps the ama to move towards the gastro intestinal tract.

2. Swedana (sweating) – a process which liquefies the toxins and increases the movement of ama towards the gastro intestinal tract.

Next comes the main purification measures :

1. Vamana – It is a therapeutic vomiting which eliminates the kapha casuing the excess mucus.

2. Virechana – It is a purgation therapy. To treat the fever which is the result of the excess Pitta being secreted in the gall bladder, liver or small intestine.

3. Nasya – It is believed that nose is the doorway to our brain which in turn is the doorway to consiousness. In Nasya, the excess of bodily humors especially the ones that are found in throat area, are eliminated through administration of medication through the nose.

4. Basti – It is an enema therapy where the herbal concoctions of sesame iols and other herbal preparations in the form of liquid medium are introduced in to the rectum. Janubasti is also very effective in treating vata disorders which results in RA disorders.

Hence panchakarma treatment is found very effective in treating the rheumatic disorders and after undergoing it the person is then advised to lead a modified lifestyle, take proper diet and do yogic exercises that helps him in keeping himself at bay from RF disorders in future too.

Ayurveda advises light anti rheumatic diets, mild yogic exercises and medicines to improve the digestive fire. Ayurvedic panchkarma treatment to cleanse the body is also advised. Slow and steady progress will acheived by good ayurvedic treatment and a complete cure will be obtained in three years. A special type of Ayurvedic panchkarma treatment is practised in the state of Kerala in India which is very effective for Ama vata.

Ayurvedic Cure for Depression

September 6, 2009 by

ayurvedic treatment42 Ayurvedic Cure for Depression
Depression, clinical depression or major depressive disorder is a mental state of chronic despair or sadness. The person suffering from depression retires from active social life and spends time in isolation, further worsening the condition.

What depression is not: clinical depression is not feeling down because of some loss or happenings that happen in day to day life. You may feel depressed for quite a time or for a few days. You will be able to identify the reason for such dejection and will get over it soon.

Clinical depression is feeling depressed with no apparent reason. This is something more serious than feeling depressed over some matter – like a loss of something.

A person with clinical depression just fails to find motivation to do anything at all.

Causes of Clinical Depression

No one can pin point a factor as the reason for depression. Several factors contribute to depression.

In the ancient Vedic periods, people had to worry little about depression. The colonized life of man can be one among the prime reasons of depression.

Heredity, physiology, childhood or early life experiences, side effects of certain medicines and psychological factors can contribute to clinical depression. Stressful life, imbalanced diet, alcohol or drug consumption etc can cause depression.

Clinical Depression Treatment

Modern medicine use strong medicines to treat clinical depression. Ayurveda has a milder approach to cure depression.

There is a variety of techniques used in Ayurveda to effectively lift the mental state of a person. Ayurveda methods for treating depression are completely free from side-effects. Recurrence of depression to previous levels is also rare in Ayurvedic depression cure.

The main requirement of Ayurvedic treatment for depression includes meditation, avoiding non-vegetarian food, eating lot of fruits and drinking lot of water; going to bed, taking meals and going to toilet at specific times of the day; going to bed early before 10pm, waking up with sunrise, walking long distances in the morning light, and putting your body in a balanced and active state.

According to Ayurveda an imbalance of the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) of tridosha and general ignorance about self contribute to depression. There is less communication between neurons of brain, which leaves the person sluggish.

Rasayana treatment, head massaging (like sirovasti, thalam), meditation are involved in Ayurvedic depression cure treatments.

The treatments are aimed at releasing the extra-influence of Kapha on Vata and Pitta. Kapha tries to balance the imbalance that may occur to vata and pitta by slowing down their movements. This leads to stagnation, darkness and the result will be depression.

Ayurveda massages and medicines like rasayana restore tridosha balance. It gives immediate cooling effect to the head. Slowly the person can get out of depression.

Herbal and Ayurvedic Treatment of Hiccups

September 4, 2009 by

ayurvedic treatment13 Herbal and Ayurvedic Treatment of Hiccups
Hiccoughs or hiccups are caused when the chest cavity gets suddenly contracted due to the irritation of the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscular partition that divides the chest and the abdomen. Its contraction leads to the sound box (larynx) to shut temporarily, producing the characteristic hic sound of the hiccough.

In Ayurveda, there are five types of hiccoughs. They are all classified under Hikka Roga. Since hiccoughs are expulsions of wind from the chest cavity, they are caused due to vitiation of the vata dosha, which represents the air element of the human body. Especially the prana and the udaan vata sub-doshas are responsible for hiccoughs.

The exact cause of hiccoughs is not known to medical science. But Ayurveda holds the gastrointestinal tract responsible for them. They can be caused due to minor problems such as flatulence and constipation. In such cases, hiccoughs are not serious and they can be taken care of easily. But hiccoughs that are caused due to chronic conditions must be considered with great care.

Out of the five types of hiccoughs, the first three – annaja, yamala and kshudra – are considered by Ayurveda to be born out of gastrointestinal causes, due to problems such as constipation and flatulence. The remaining two types, gambhira and mahati, are caused due to serious complications. These hiccoughs cannot be treated easily.

(1) Useful Herbs/Plants in the Treatment of Hiccoughs

1. Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Inhaling black pepper powder can induce a person to sneezing. Sneezing is a violent movement of the respiratory tract. Therefore, it can put an end to hiccoughs.

2. Cardamom (Elattaria cardamomum)

Cardamom is another spice that is used for the treatment of hiccoughs. If the hiccough is persistent then a half teaspoon of cardamom powder is mixed in a cupful of water and then boiled to half its quantity. This solution is then filtered and drunk.

3. Mustard (Brassica junpea)

Due to its strong taste, mustard has capacity to stimulate the nerves in the throat region. Slowly swallowing a tablespoonful of mustard seeds mixed with ghee helps to reduce hiccoughs.

(2) Dietary Treatments for Hiccoughs

Most hiccoughs are due to indigestions in the stomach. Hence, the diet must be formulated so as to be light on the stomach. Take more fibers in the diet which will help in the proper digestion of food. Avoid too much spicy food, as spices take a long time to digest. White meats must be preferred over red meats.

If the person has recurrent hiccoughs, then a vata pacifying diet must be prescribed. Such a diet is one that is not totally dry – all dishes are moistened with a little ghee or oil. Lots of fresh juicy fruits and water must be consumed.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Hiccoughs

The treatments of the five types of hiccoughs cannot be done in a general manner. The first step in the Ayurvedic treatment of hiccoughs is to investigate its cause. Minor hiccoughs will disappear in some time, and are not much of a problem. But if the hiccough is persistent, then the following therapies must be followed:-

(i) For acute hiccoughs, Mayurpichcha mashi is given along with ginger and honey. Mayurpichcha mashi is the ash of burnt peacock feather. This mixture is to be licked repeatedly, after every few minutes. It stops the hiccoughs in some time.

(ii) For persistent hiccoughs, take Chitrakadi vati in quantities of 250 milligrams thrice a day. Treatment is to be continued for two weeks. It is advisable to give carminative foods such as ginger, black pepper, fennel, cardamom, etc. to cure the gastrointestinal problem that may be causing the hiccoughs.

(iii) Somnath rasa is also a commonly prescribed medicine for hiccoughs.

(4) Home Medications

There are many household remedies used for controlling hiccoughs. But it must be borne in mind that if the hiccoughs do not stop with these remedies, then there is some serious cause, which must be investigated properly.

1. The age-old remedy is to get someone to suddenly frighten you. Like, get someone to scare you by suddenly shouting in your face. This will divert your nerves and stop the hiccoughs.

2. Drinking a glassful of water or even gargling with water helps to reduce hiccoughs. The best way to do this is to cover the ears and then drink the water in fast gulps, without stopping to breathe. This is the surest way to stop minor hiccoughs.

3. Eating something spicy and pungent can stop hiccoughs.

4. Try massaging the region at the back of the neck. This is the place where the nerves are much accessible. Massaging these nerves stimulates them into stopping the hiccoughs.

5. In case of children with hiccoughs, a spoonful of peanut butter or honey is a good remedy. It should be swallowed at once, without retaining it in the mouth. Alternatively, a spoonful of curds sweetened with sugar can also be given to children.

6. Another remedy that works for children is to make them hold some sugar below their tongues and then drink a glassful of water. Relief from hiccoughs is immediate.

7. Sudden jerking movements of the body, especially the neck and the chest, help in reducing the hiccoughs. This includes pulling the head back or forth vigorously, jumping, swaying to and fro, etc. Lying on the back for a while can also provide relief.
