Acne is a very common skin ailment found mostly in the period of puberty. It is more common in women than in men. Acne is characterized by the presence of eruptions on the skin, which are commonly known as zits or pimples.

Acne is a sign of the impurity within the body. The impurity could be in the blood, which manifests itself externally as acne. If the blood is impure, then the sebaceous (sweat) glands will have to work harder in eliminating these wastes. This hyperactivity of the sweat glands causes acne.

Hormonal imbalances are very important causes of acne. During puberty there are major hormonal changes in the body, as also during each menstrual cycle of women. Therefore, these are important periods when acne can occur. People who consume steroids for any reason also stand a higher chance of getting acne.

In Ayurveda, acne is known as Yauvan pidika. It is classified as both a vataja and a kaphaja. Any increase in the dhaatus of rakta and medha are responsible in a major way for the formation of acne.

(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Acne

1. Almond (Amygdalus communis)

The almond replenishes the lost nutrients from the skin. Thus it makes the skin healthier, which is an important step in reducing acne.

2. Aloe vera (Aloe vera)

Aloe vera is widely recognized to be one of the most effective herbs in the treatment of acne. It is an important ingredient in most cosmetic products also. Aloe vera can remove the marks that acne leaves behind, and it gives a moist shiny sheen to the skin.

3. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

Bergamot is an age-old Ayurvedic remedy to treat skin problems. On the face, it is especially useful in the treatment of rashes and acne.

4. Indian blackberry (Syzygium cumini)

Popularly known as jamun or jambula in India, this blackberry has a purple juice. The purple juice has an alkaline content which can reduce the pus formation in the pimples. Thus, jamun prevents the acne from spreading and also checks its further outbreaks.

5. Sandalwood (Santalum album)

The sandalwood is a fragrant herb which is looked upon with utmost reverence in Ayurveda. It has a religious significance. In the human body, it can produce a cooling effect and treat the blood of its impurities. Owing to this, sandalwood can treat acne among its many other uses.



(2) Dietary Treatments for Acne

Acne is directly dependent on the diet, since it is a blood impurity. It is absolutely necessary to keep the blood clean so that the facial skin does not become a victim of ungainly pimples.

Maintain a healthy dietary regime. Oily and spicy foods can aggravate the acne. Foods that are beneficial for acne are green leafy vegetables, salad vegetables and fruits that have good water content in them. Foods that are difficult to digest can aggravate the acne.



(3) Ayurvedic Treatment for Acne

Ayurvedic methods do not use any thick pastes for the treatment of acne for the simple reason that these pastes can clog the pores further, leading to aggravation of the pimples. Instead, mild and thin pastes of the following herbs are prescribed:-

1. Guduchi

2. Shatavari

3. Sarsaparilla

The preparation Arogyavardhini also has good effects in the treatment of pimples.

(4) Home Medications

There are many household remedies that can be used to control the condition. Most of these remedies are external applications, but some of them are also meant to be taken orally.

1. Mix the husk of mustard seeds in paste form with cow’s milk. Apply this mixture on the affected areas every night and wash it off thoroughly in the morning. The eruptions should disappear within a week.

2. Application of buttermilk on the affected regions is also helpful.

3. Prepare a mixture of nutmeg and red sandalwood in water. Apply this mixture on the face.

4. Mix the pulp of the neem fruit in water and apply it on the face. This application provides quicker but temporary relief from the pimples.

5. Application of a paste of thorns of the semolina in milk for three consecutive nights will help reduce the eruptions.

6. A very simple and cheap remedy is to apply the paste of orange peels on the face.

7. Indian plum or jambola must be squeezed in water and this paste must be applied on the affected part. This is more effective in the pimples which appear in early youth.

8. One traditional method to keep acne away is to wash the face twice or thrice a day with buttermilk. This is also believed to increase the glow on the face.

9. Apart from this, the following points must be borne in mind:-

10. Maintain proper facial hygiene. This can be done by washing the face at least thrice a day. Use lemon soap for washing. It is very important to wash the face after returning home from outside.

Ayurveda believes in three doshas, which are vata, pitta, and kapha, each person having a unique blend of them. A disease is viewed, as a state of imbalance and Ayurveda believes that the mouth is the seat of the kapha dosha. Care must be taken not to vitiate it since problems with the kapha dosha lead to several dental problems.

Few Dental diseases are:

Bad breath, Yellow/filthy teeth, Dental decay, Loosening of teeth, Bleeding gums, Toothache, Dealing with Dental diseases, Bad breath.

Dental hygiene is to be maintained.Mix lemon with warm water and gargle, a tea made from fenugreek seeds must be taken frequently.Fresh guava is helpful in bad breath.

Yellow and filthy teeth

Mix salt with finely powdered rind of lime. Use this as toothpowder. Take 50 gms of keekar wood, roasted alum 20 gms and namak lahori 10 gms. Grind together. Rub this powder over your teeth, Twigs of neem.

Rub an orange peel on the teeth every night.

Dental decay

Diet rich in calcium is recommended. Intake of dairy products will help. Mix 1 tsp of turmeric with 1 tsp of salt. Add mustard oil to make a paste. Rub on teeth and gums, Avoid sugar intake, include raw vegetables in diet.

Bleeding gums: Cleaning teeth with twig of neem,banyan,babul and holy basil stops bleeding. Massage gums with alum mixed mustard oil daily and rinse mouth with water mixed with alum. Chewing leaves of guava tree stops bleeding from gums. Increase sufficient amount of roughage, lemon, citrus fruits, and green vegetables.

Toothache: Use of til, cinnamon and clove oil helps to prevent toothache. A clove of garlic with rock salt will relieve pain also a pinch of pepper powder mixed with clove oil can lighten toothache. A paste of the bark of bay berry prepared with vinegar if applied on the affected tooth will reduce the toothache. Avoid consumption of soft drinks, refined carbohydrates, and sugar.

Ayurveda is a system of medicine that combines natural therapies with a personalized approach to the treatment. Peel and crush a clove of fresh garlic and mix it with peanut butter. Apply it to the aching tooth and keep it there for some time.

The Three Types of Dosha

Ayurveda is the ancient medical system of India. In the texts of this system, it is described that the body of a human being is composed of different element combinations also known by the term dosha.

There are 5 elements that compose a single dosha. These elements are the following: fire, water, air, ether, and earth. Different combinations of these 5 elements form the 3 dosha of the Ayurveda: Kapha (combination of earth and water), Pitta (combination of water and fire), Vata (combination of ether and air).

A person is born with a predominant dosha and this will determine his/ her physical trait as well as his/ her characteristics. Each of the dosha has its own determining factors.

Kapha Dosha

Physically speaking, people with Kapha tend to be heavily built and have large frames. This is due to the belief that water and earth are heavy elements. They are usually predisposed to have larger proportions and padded joints. They have thick, dark colored (usually black or brown), and wavy hair. Their skin is smooth that may lean towards being oily. An imbalance in Kapha could lead to being overweight. It may also cause the body to weaken and be lethargic.

As for the characteristic, people belonging to the Kapha Dosha are calm in thoughts and in words. They are sympathetic, easy going and pleasant to be with. They are also thought to be very loyal.

An out of balance Kapha can lead to depression, and sluggishness in thought. Imbalances however can easily be counteracted.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta Dosha, a combination of water and fire, are naturally born hot and can easily overheat. They can be described as persons who are strong, courageous, driven, and determined. When Pitta is out of balance, they usually suffer from ailments related to heat like fever, acidity, colitis, inflammation, and ulcers. Out of balance Pitta may also cause unsolicited competitiveness and aggressiveness.

Counteracting the out of balance Pitta can be done through yoga practice and meditation. This is to cool down the mental state, aggressiveness and irritability of the hot Pitta Dosha.

Physically, they can be called medium in build. They are neither heavy nor petite. They are also believed to have warm skin and thinning hair. People leaning towards Pitta Dosha are known to be ambitious and goal oriented.

Pitta Dosha are also believed to be moderate sleepers and are inclined to favor cool environments.

Vata Dosha

Vata Dosha, a combination of ether and air, are thinly built. They possess prominent joints and slender frames. Their skin is naturally dry and they have thinning hair.

Among the three dosha, they are known to be the most active, quick and light in thought. People inclined to Vata Dosha also make friends quite easily.

Imbalances can also occur to people with Vata Dosha. This can be done through regular exercise and proper diet. The environment can also play a big role in avoiding the Vata to go out of balance.

Keeping A Well Balanced Dosha

Every person is thought to have a dominant dosha during birth. The physical aspect, as well as the personality of a person, will be molded to the kind of dosha he/ she has. However, it is believed in the scriptures of the Ayurveda that a person may have more than just one dosha.

Doshas, according to the Ayurveda, needs to stay balanced in a person. An imbalance will let the negative aspect of the dosha manifest. There are several ways on how to keep the balance of the dosha.

Vata Dosha

Vata Doshas (space and air elements) are known to be active persons – cheerful and light minded. This dosha can become out of balance when there is too much wind/ air in the body, mind and environment. This imbalance may leave a feeling of being ungrounded. The best remedy for this is to introduce more earth element to the mind and body.

To keep a well-balanced Vata Dosha, it is recommended that you have a regular waking up schedule. It is highly advised that you wake up at the same exact time everyday. Meditating twice a day would also be a great help since it can calm down the mind and body of the Vata Dosha.

It is also suggested that to keep a balanced Vata Dosha you must eat three meals a day. It would also be good if you prefer to eat foods that are sour, salty, and sweet.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha Dosha is the combination of the elements earth and water. These elements are considered to be heavy thus Kapha Doshas are known to be heavy in built and have large frames.

When a Kapha Dosha is out of balance, it is believed that more than enough earth is in the body, mind and environment. This can result to a feeling of lethargy, sluggishness and dullness. A good way to keep the balance or to counteract an imbalance is to keep the circulation moving.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta Dosha is the combination of the elements fire and water. People under this category are known to be “hot” – aggressive and ambitious. Physically, they are known to be medium in built and possess warm skin.

An out of balance Pitta Dosha can cause the feeling of being excessively heated up internally. This is the result of having too much fire in the body. The best way to balance this is by brining more space element in.

How to Practice Ayurvedic Skin Care
