Ayurvedic and Dietary Treatments for High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is known as Rakta Gata vata in Ayurveda. It can be caused due to vitiation of any of the three doshas, though the contribution of the vata dosha may be more, as it is responsible for the circulation of blood. The following are the main precipitating factors for people with different doshas:-
1. Vata type of Hypertension – This is caused by extreme emotions such as worry, anxiety and stress.
2. Pitta type of Hypertension – This is caused by negative emotions such as hatred, jealousy and feeling for revenge.
3. Kapha type of Hypertension – This is caused by problems with the digestive system.
(1) Useful Herbs in the Treatment of High Blood Pressure
1. Alfalfa (Medicago satina)
Alfalfa contains several elements which are needed in the softening of the hard arteries. This reduces the tension in the arteries and hence helps to treat hypertension.
2. Bloodwort (Achillea millefolium)
Bloodwort is a sweat-inducing herb. It makes the blood flow towards the skin for expelling the sweat. Due to this free movement of the blood, the high blood pressure is reduced. Bloodword contains an alkaloid which is effective in reducing high blood pressure.
3. Garlic (Allium sativum)
Garlic is an antispasmodic agent. Hence it reduces the pressure in the arteries caused due to the pumping action of the heart during blood circulation. Garlic creates a rhythm in the pumping of the heart, which eases the pulse. Other high blood pressure problems such as dizziness, shortness of breath and indigestion are also taken care of by garlic. Garlic is widely considered to be the best remedy for high blood pressure.
4. Jaundice Berry (Berberis vulgaris)
Jaundice berry is another very effective remedy in the treatment of high blood pressure. It eases the tension in the arteries by making them dilate. Thus the blood flow in them is facilitated.
5. Parsley (Petroselinum crispum)
Parsley is like a monitor of the blood vessels. It regulates the flow of blood in them and maintains easy circulation. It looks after the entire arterial system. Hence it is a very beneficial herb for people with high blood pressure.
6. Rauwolfia (Rauwolfia serpentina)
The effects of rauwolfia on the arteries and veins of the human system have been investigated in detail, and immensely positive results have been obtained. Rauwolfia has a treasure-trove of alkaloids for easing the arteries, synchronizing the blood flow in them, reducing palpitation and even removing the cholesterol buildup in the arteries. Hence, practitioners of all forms of medicine acknowledge the effects of rauwolfia. In Ayurveda especially, the root of the rauwolfia is prescribed for hypertension patients. The Ayurvedic name for rauwolfia is sarpagandha.
(2) Dietary Treatments for High Blood Pressure
A strict dietary regimen is important to seek early treatment from high blood pressure. The following points must be obeyed:-
1. Salt should be reduced or totally eliminated from the diet. Hot and spicy foods should also be avoided.
2. Instead of hydrogenated fats, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats must be used. These include oils of sesame, olive, flaxseed, mustard and groundnut. Ghee and butter made from cow’s milk are beneficial. Buffalo milk should be avoided.
3. Indigestion should be taken care of by consuming a good amount of leafy vegetables containing fiber.
4. Bitter gourd and drumsticks are advantageous vegetables for people suffering from high blood pressure. Colocasia must be avoided, but yellow pumpkin helps in reducing blood pressure.
5. Among fruits, bananas, oranges, guavas and apples are good. All kinds of dry fruits and nuts are good.
6. Sweets and chocolates must be avoided.
7. Red meats must be avoided. But white meats, especially fish are beneficial in lowering blood pressure.
(3) Ayurvedic Concepts for High Blood Pressure
Sarpagandha is the drug of choice in high blood pressure. Not only is this drug used in Ayurvedic medicine, but it is also used in allopathic medicine in the treatment of high blood pressure. In addition, the following herbal preparations are prescribed depending on the doshic cause of high blood pressure:-
a. For Vataja High Blood Pressure, jatamansi and brahmi are prescribed.
b. For Pittaja High Blood Pressure, sarsarapilla and sandalwood are prescribed.
c. For Kaphaja High Blood Pressure, calamus, arjuna, shilajit, guggulu and berberis are prescribed.
(4) Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure
a. Have a spoonful of lemon juice mixed with honey every morning.
b. Oranges are very helpful in high blood pressure. Have a juice of two or three oranges every day.
c. Prepare a powdered mixture of cumin seeds, fennel seeds and sugar. Take one spoonful of this mixture in water every morning and evening.

Medical Measures
For 200 years, the drugs digitalis and digoxin-both derived from the herb foxglove-were the first-line mainstream medical treatments for CHF. But then reports that these drugs might cause heart rhythm disturbances, or arrhythmias, began cropping up.
Today, digoxin is still prescribed for CHF, but it is no longer a first-line treatment. Most doctors now prescribe either diuretics, which help eliminate fluid, or vasodilators, which lower blood pressure and allow blood to circulate more easily. If your doctor recommends a diuretic or vasodilator, be sure to ask about potential side effects. Take the pills on the prescribed schedule. And if you notice any side effects, discuss them with your doctor.
Your doctor might also prescribe lowdose aspirin. In a study conducted at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, researchers spent 5 years tracking the health status of 6,800 people with CHF. Some of the people took aspirin, while others did not. In the course of the study, 41 percent of the non-aspirin takers were hospitalized or died because of CHF. Among the aspirin takers, that figure was just 26 percent.
Another option in CHF treatment is enrollment in a cardiac rehabilitation program. These programs are usually recommended for people who have had heart attacks and for people with angina.

Blood Pressure and Diabetes: Ayurvedic Natural Remedies for the Dreaded Duo

Lowering blood pressure can be attained by opting a vegetarian diet, daily physical exercise, losing weight if over weight, quitting smoking and alcohol and practicing of yoga and meditation can help lower blood pressure.
When to take meditation for high blood pressure –
If you are diabetic and your blood pressure reaches 140/90 Hg, you will need to take active measures to lower blood pressure. Remember this is only for diabetic patients and people without diabetes are not generally advised to take medicines if their BP is below 160/100.
Being diabetic increases the risk of heart failure, nervous system damages, kidney failure, liver damages and several other complications including lack of nutrient supply to arms and legs.
Ayurvedic control methods to lower blood pressure levels are mainly centered around dietary controls. Lower intake of sea salt, inclusion of bitter melon in diet, controlling intake of sugar and fat, taking herbal tea, etc are the prime directions. Lifestyle adjustments like taking 7-8 hours of daily sleep, practicing yoga and meditation, leading an active life, dealing only with people you like, etc keep you control blood pressure.
Bitter gourd (bitter melon) juice is beneficial in managing diabetes. Take more than half a glass of bitter gourd juice two times a day.
Salacia oblonga is an Ayurvedic herb useful in lowering blood sugar levels, blood insulin levels and normalizing blood pressure levels. Salacia oblonga thus is beneficial in treating both diabetes and high blood pressure.
Sarpagandhi (Rowolfia serpentina), is another Ayurvedic herb effective in bringing down blood pressure levels.
Shilajith, though usually termed as an aphrodisiac, is beneficial in lowering blood sugar levels. Pure shilajit can be taken as a preventive and curative Ayurvedic medicine against diabetes.
Specific Ayurvedic therapies like dhara, kizhi, nasyam, etc are treatments for diabetes. The treatments are equally beneficial in normalizing blood pressure too.
Diabetic patients who also have high blood pressure must regularly check their blood pressure levels. They also must take directed hours of daily rest and do moderate exercises on a regular basis.

Swedish Massage and Ayurvedic Massage-which One is for You?

With so many different kinds of massage therapy programs available today, it has made it difficult for people to choose which one is for them
The Swedish Massage, which is often called the classic or traditional massage. This is the most common massage therapy method and it is what most people usually prefer. The long and flowing strokes characterize this method, and it is ideal for relaxing muscles, improving joint flexibility and aiding in better circulation.
The first stroke is known as effleurage, this involves a long gliding stroke from the neck down to the base of the spine or from the shoulder down to the fingertips. It is also done on the limbs with all strokes directed toward the heart to aid blood and lymphatic flow. A therapist would normally use there whole hand or a thumb pad to do this.
Next is petrissage, this consists of the gentle lifting of muscles, then rolling and squeezing them, while applying a gentle pressure. This helps to enhance deeper circulation, it also increases circulation which in turn eliminates toxins from muscle and nerve tissue.
The third technique friction, is the most forceful one and uses deep circular movements using fingertips. it is applied near bony areas and joints, it relaxes the muscle fiber which in turn enhances flexibility in muscles and joints.
Last of all, a therapist will use vibration or shaking, this would normally entail the pressing of hands on the back or limbs and shaking in a vigorous motion for a few moments. Again this is used to improve circulation and is beneficial to people with low-back pain.
The Ayurvedic massage originated from India and the aim of this method is to create harmony and balance within the individual. It is worth noting that this method is renown for removal of toxins and rejuvenation of the body.
Ayurvedic massage uses specific oils that suit your dosha. One such, is the Abhyanga-Garshana which comprises of skin brushing followed by an oil massage. Udwarthanam which is a slimming massage that uses herbal powders and the Ayurvedic foot massage which is a deep massage where the therapist uses his feet.
Now you have enough knowledge on both Swedish and Ayurvedic massage, it is up to you to choose between the two which best suits your style of relaxation. Remember both massages having unique qualities and techniques, the choosing part can be a little tricky though, so if you are still undecided why not try both?

Healthy Ayurvedic Food Combination

Drinking ice-cooled water during and immediately after taking a meal can hamper the digestive process. Digestive enzymes become inactive. This conditions leads to incomplete digestion of food and absorption of right nutrients in wrong combinations by the body. This leads to accumulation of bodily wastes called ama in lining tissues of blood vessels, heart, respiratory system and digestive tract.
Replace cold water with light warm water. Sip warm water at moderate levels while taking meals. Don’t drink too much of water during meals. It can dilute digestive juice and cause poor digestion. Take plenty of moderately warm water one hour before meals. You can take plenty of water one hour after meals.
Carbohydrate rich food is not combined with acidic food items. For example if you take bread and lemon juice together, it will cause the digestive system erratically digest both the items. Don’t eat grain, cereal or pulses item with acidic items like citrus fruits, grapes, pineapple etc.
Protein rich food items go well with low-carb food items like rice and vegetable. Vegetables also go well with all types of starchy, carbohydrate rich food items.
Fruits should ideally be taken as a separate meal, independent of other regular meals.
Milk and meat is bad combination. Never take milk and meat in a single meal. Separate intake of milk and meat by at least four hours. Milk and meat is good for body in several ways. When taken together, it becomes toxic. Many modern food styles fly on the face of this Ayurvedic food combination rule.
Milk is also to be taken warm. Cold milk can cause indigestion. Taking milk too hot also is not desirable.
Ending the meals with sweet dessert is not allowed in Ayurveda. One needs to end a full-belly meal with some hot and light item like buttermilk. Buttermilk is curd diluted with water and added with a pinch of salt, chilly powder, some curry leaves and a bit of ginger. Many times ginger and curry leaves are avoided from the combination, only due to difficulty in availability.
Other factor to keep in mind with Ayurvedic food combination includes the endurance of the digestive system. A strong digestive fire (pitta) almost over-rides some of the effects associated with unscientific food combination. Not all are blessed with such a strong digestive fire.
And the most important food rule by Ayurveda
Don’t burden your digestive system by eating too full. Over-eating is already a strict no-no, Ayurveda suggests you take half-stomach solid food, fill a quarter with water and leave the rest free. This is best for proper digestion.

This poem caught my eyes while browsing internet. Monsoon brings joy as plants wear a green look, rivers swell to brim and dry lands become wet. The grim side of this season is increased humidity, which troubles humans.
What is humidity?
Humidity is the amount of water vapour in air. It is usually described as “relative humidity” and expressed in percentage. 100% humidity means the water vapour in the air is at its maximum at that particular temperature.
When humidity is low (amount of water vapour is less in air), the evaporation from the surrounding areas is rapid. Hence the clothes dry quickly, soil dries up, sweat evaporates from skin etc.
When humidity is high (amount of water vapour is more in air), clothes dry slowly, sweat do not evaporate from skin and we feel sticky and uncomfortable.
We feel comfortable when humidity is 45-50% and temperature 20 to 22 degree Celsius. Any broad variation in these may cause health problems.
Effects of increased humidity on human body :
Human body maintains its temperature by transferring body heat to surrounding air through evaporation of perspiration (sweat). When humidity is high in air the evaporation of sweat decreases and maintenance of body temperature is altered. Along with high humidity if atmosphere temperature is high, the blood circulation increases on surface of skin and decreases in muscles and other organs. Hence we experience fatigue in climate which is high in temperature and humidity.
Molds, mildews, bacteria, virus, dust mites proliferate when humidity increases in surrounding air. They grow on air conditioners, shower heads, damp walls, toilets , wet carpets and on other moist substances. Their spores which are called bioaerosoles, are constantly released into air. Bioaerosoles cause infection and allergies. They trigger asthma attacks and other respiratory diseases.
Researchers have found that osteo -arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis flare up in high humid weather.
According to Ayurvedic texts the humidity increases during rainy season. The agni (body fire or digestive power) which is reduced during summer, decreases still further and gets vitiated by doshas. Doshas get vitiated due to changes in weather, like increased humidity, coldness, dampness etc.
How to reduce humidity at home
1. Repair the source which is causing dampness or wetness at home .Leaking roofs, taps and tanks have to be repaired to prevent leaking.
2. Keep the rain drain free from clogs and let the water from rain drain flow away from your basement.
3. Switch on exhaust fans or vent fans after bathing and cooking.
4. Do not dry clothes inside. This increases humidity inside home.
5. Use a digital hygrometer to monitor humidity.
6. Use a dehumidifier to bring down the humidity to 50% or less.
Ayurvedic tips to keep healthy in humid conditions:
1. One has to undergo detoxification therapies like Vamana and Virechana.
2. Asthapana basthi (An enema of herbal decoction) has to be administered to keep away humidity related health problems.
3. The digestive system gets weakened due to dehydration in summer. This leads to low digestive power. This is further weakened by vitiation of doshas and dhatus due to increased humidity. Hence following diets which increase power of digestion and strengthen the digestive system would be beneficial.
a. Light foods prepared out of old barley, rice and wheat.
b. Sour and salted soups of vegetables.
c. Drinking boiled and cooled water mixed with little honey.
d. Consuming little quantity of wine prepared out of grapes.
e. Adding ginger and green gram in daily diet.
f. Eating warm food.
g. The taste of food must be preferably sour and salty.
4. Do not walk in bare foot. Always wear dry foot wear to prevent growth of fungus on nails and between toes. Dry your feet and webs with soft dry cloth whenever they are wet.
5. The clothes should be fumigated using fragrant herbs. Drying clothes with fumes of loban and dry neem leaves is recommended in ayurvedic texts.
6. We should not sleep in basement as it will be damp and growth of moulds and fungus will be more.
7. Fumigating the house with smoke of dried neem leaves in evenings for 1-2 minutes is an excellent ayurvedic method to check the growth of microbes,
8. Always keep the surroundings dry and clean. Do not allow water to get accumulated around.
Ayurvedic Home remedies for Humidity related diseases
1. Apply castor oil or sesame oil on cracked feet and skin.
2. A freshly prepared paste of turmeric, neem and sesame seeds is recommended in ayurveda for fungal infection between toes.
3. Drink a glass of warm water mixed with a tea spoon of honey in empty stomach. This flushes out accumulated toxins.
4. Freshly prepared radish juice is the best remedy for cold.
5. A pinch each of long pepper powder and rock salt mixed in warm water reduces cough

Psoriasis – a Natural Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Psoriasis is quite common, affecting around two per cent of the population, although people with very mild symptoms may not be aware they have it. Psoriasis can begin at any age but usually starts either around the age of 20 or between 50 and 60.
Causes of Psoriasis
As said earlier according to modern medical science the causes of psoriasis are unknown .But the following factors can trigger psoriasis.
1.Heredity – If one parent is affected then there is 15% of chances for the child to suffer from psoriasis. If both the parents are affected then the possibility of child getting the psoriasis is 60%.
2.Throat infections trigger psoriasis.
3.Trauma or hurt on skin like cuts, bruises or burns may cause psoriasis.
4.Some medicines or skin irritants initiate psoriasis.
5.Smoking and alcohol are other two factors which activate psoriasis.
6.Mental stress or psychological trauma may also set off psoriasis
What does ayurveda say about psoriasis?
Psoriasis is caused by vitiation of vata and kapha dosha. The vitiated doshas affect the skin and blood tissues. They also influence water element of the affected region on skin. Thus the skin which is influenced by affected doshas becomes discolored (white or copper colored), scaly and thin.
Causes of vitiation of Doshas
1.Consuming opposite foods.
2.Controlling natural urges.
3.Exposure to severe climatic conditions
4.Consuming food that is too salty, too sour and/or too heavy for digestion.
5.Sleeping during the afternoon.
6.Taking bath in cold water immediately after physical exertion.
7.Mental stress.
Changes that occur on skin during psoriasis
It takes 27 days for skin to replace itself with new mature skin cells. But the regions of skin affected by psoriasis the skin replace itself within 3-4 days with plenty of immature skin cells forming thick psoriatic patches.
According to ayurveda principles the vitiated vata dries the water element of skin and also initiate rapid growth of skin tissue. The vitiated Kapha dosha causes itching on the affected skin. The blood which is affected by vata and kapha adversely influences healing process.
Self-care for psoriasis
•Avoid all factors which trigger psoriasis.
•Reduce stress levels through meditation and Yoga .
•Do not prick, peel or scratch skin. This may trigger psoriasis.
•After bath or wash pat dry the skin. Do not rub the towel vigorously on skin.
•Avoid soap. Instead use gram flour (besan flour) as soap dries the skin.
•After washing, pat the skin dry, don’t irritate it by rubbing vigorously.
•Apply moisturizing creams liberally on affected areas after bath.
•Opt for cotton clothes over synthetic ones.
Ayurvedic tips for Psoriasis
1.Avoid consuming opposite foods.
2.Do not control natural urges like vomiting, urination, bowel emptying etc.
3.Do not take cold water bath immediately after a heavy work out, traveling, a long walk etc.
4.Take care not to consume foods which cause indigestion.
5.Absolutely do not eat too much of salty, sour or acidic foods.
6.Avoid sleeping in afternoons.
7.Say no to radish, urad dal, sesame, jaggery (gur), curds, fish and other sour foods.
8.Always apply besan flour or herbal scrub instead of soap.
9.Smear herbal balm which is infused with vata and kapha balancing herbs.
10.Keep on applying moisturizing gels or creams continuously to maintain the moisture levels of skin.

Ayurvedic beauty includes two things – diet and lifestyle. These two things help you achieve the way you look and feel.
Ayurveda considers beauty as an intimate part of the human personality.
But before you can apply ayurvedic principles to make you look good day after day and year after year you first need to figure out which of the following three categories your skin falls into:
- If your skin is dry, thin and sensitive, susceptible to dullness and wrinkles, you have Vata type skin.
- If your skin is more reddish, warm, and extremely sensitive, prone to breakouts and easily affected by the foods you eat, heat and sun you have Pitta skin.

Once you have determined which skin type your skin falls into, you can try some of the following suggestions for making your skin look and feel young.
Caring for Vata (dry) skin type
Vata skin types should avoid any products that are too drying (alcohol-based cleansers). Perform Ayurvedic Oil Massage to your whole body in the morning before you shower.
Use gentle, all-natural moisturizer to keep skin hydrated. Provide added deep lipid support.
Use gentle, moisture-balancing cleanser and splash your face with water several times when you cleanse.
Caring for Pitta (sensitive) skin type
Pitta skin type needs both cooling and nurturing. Use skin care products that enhance resistance to the sun.
Pitta skin types should avoid products that are too abrasive or heating.
Try ayurvedic herb Flame of Forest. It can help protect Pitta skin from photo-sensitivity. But unlike other ayurvedic herbs, it needs to be used in combination with other herbs for a balanced effect on the skin.
Use cooling oil for the daily massage to stimulate circulation and create a glow.
Use gently, natural skin care products for cleansing and moisturizing.
Caring for Kapha (oily) skin type
Kapha skin type needs cleansing the most. That’s because Kapha skin has excessive oil on the surface.
Try not to counteract oiliness with products that are too drying instead, try cleansing the pores from the inside. by eating less heavy, sweet, and oily foods.
Don’t clog the pores by using greasy creams.
Take warm baths, cleanse with a gentle herbal cleanser, and exfoliate with an herbal clay twice a week to gently cleanse the pores, remove impurities, and open the channels.
